loses life in collision

Spartanburg police offi-
cer who lost his life while
on duty last Tuesday will
be remembered this week.
Master Police Officer Ja-
son Harris was operating a
motorcycle at around 9:40
p.m. on April 11 when it
collided with an oncoming
vehicle on Union Street in
Spartanburg.
Moments before the
collision, other officers
with the Spartanburg Po-
lice Department respond-
ed to a call for service
reporting a burglary at
216 Cedar Springs Rd. Of-
ficers on the scene of the
alleged burglary called for
assistance from other offi-
cers. Officer Harris was re-
sponding in the direction
of those officers when the
collision occurred, Spar-
tanburg PD said in a state-
ment.
Harris would have been
with the department for
12 years in July. He leaves
behind a wife and three
children.
Officer Harris has been
a loyal and valued mem-
ber of the Spartanburg Po-
lice Department and will
be greatly missed, Police
Chief Alonzo Thompson
said, Officer Harris has
served our community
well and we appreciate the
sacrifices that he and his
family has made to our
community. We best hon-
or Officer Harris memory
and the memory of other
fallen law enforcement
professionals by con-
tinuing our service to the
communities we vowed to
protect.
Harris was a member
of the departments SWAT
team, Motorcycle Unit, K-9
Tracking Team, Down-
town Bicycle Unit, Housing
Complex Team and was a
Gang Investigator.
In his memory, members
of the community donated
222 units of blood last Fri-
day.
Funeral services will be
held on Wednesday at 11
a.m. at First Baptist Spar-
tanburg.
The sanctuary seats ap-
proximately 1400 people
and there are three over-
flow areas on the church
campus. Burial will be at
Wood Memorial Park in
Greer immediately after
the service.
A procession will travel
west on Saint John Street
to West Main Street; turn
right on West Main Street,
(US 29) until reaching Gap
Creek Road. The ceme-
tery is located at 863 Gap
Creek Rd.

tional food, entertainment, displays,
sports exhibitions and an interna-
tional marketplace, will take place

The festival packs a lot of activi-
ties into five hours and crowds have
grown dramatically over the first
three years, said Ashlyn Stone, the
citys events supervisor. Its possi-

The festival will feature non-stop
live entertainment on two stages,
ranging from the Greenville Chinese
Culture Association, to sword and
belly dancing demonstrations.

s our recent changeling, Bub, has
recovered fully from his attack by
the other enormous orange (now
nicknamed, The Big Ginger, or Ging,
for short) tom, we debated over letting
him outside, supervised, as he has been
gazing dejectedly out the windows at
our other cats, all sunning themselves
on the front porch before coming back
in after breakfast and inspecting their
food dishes for the 14th time on the off
chance that they have been magically
refilled before 5pm.
It had been difficult to explain to a for-
mer feral cat why he cannot return to his
life as a free range feline while he sees
the other cats having a wander through
the rose beds and stretching luxuriously
in the tender green spring grass. Its for
your own good, I said to Bub, having
to push him away from his attempt to
escape through the front door as I tried
to leave. Youre just now completely
recovered and the upstairs back deck is
open. You can go hang out up there.
Bub looked at me and though I didnt
hear it, Im quite sure he sighed as he
simply flopped over on his side and con-
tinued to stare out the storm door.

Q: Who lives in Greer?
A: We always hear about
growth in Greer and how the
city is becoming a rival for
places like Greenville and
Spartanburg, but what does
that really mean?
How has our city changed
and how should we expect it
to keep changing?
The most common
age in the city limits is
between 25-34.
Fortunately, the folks over
at the Greer Development
Corporation (GDC) have given
us a lot of this information, as
they continue recruiting new
business to the area.
According to the GDC web-
site, Greer is one of the states
fastest growing cities.
From 1990 to 2000, Greers
population grew by 63%.
From 2000 to 2013, it grew by
another 54%. Today, the City
of Greers population totals
more than 27,000 and is
projected to reach 35,000 by
2020, the website (greerde-
velopment.com) states.
The demographics, however,
have not changed much in
the last six years. According
to data from ESRI, Cauca-
sians made up 71.7% of the
population in 2016, com-
pared to 70.9% in 2010. That
number is projected to fall to
70.5% by 2021. The Hispanic
population has climbed from
14.4% to 15.1% between 2010
and 2016. It is expected to
increase to 17% over the next
six years. The African Amer-
ican population has dropped
from 17.3% to 15.6%, but isnt
expected to change much by
2021. The most common age
in the city limits is between
25-34, but could change to 35-
44 in the next six years.
These few facts are just a
sampling of what you can find
at the GDC website, and could
be a helpful resource as we all
continue to monitor Greers
growth.

South Carolina faces real
problems with Real ID
State lawmakers are racing to bring South
Carolina into compliance with the federal Real
ID law so state residents wont suddenly be
barred from entering federal buildings or trav-
eling on airplanes.
While we remain confident the S.C. General
Assembly will rectify this thorny situation, its
one we shouldnt be facing.
Passed in 2005, Real IDs origins are loosely
connected to the 9/11 terror attacks. Recom-
mended by the 9/11 Commission, the law set
standards for the issuance of sources of identi-
fication, such as drivers licenses, according to
the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Real ID establishes minimum security stan-
dards for identification cards, standards South
Carolina currently doesnt meet.
While fighting terrorism is noteworthy, South
Carolinas slowness to bring the state into com-
pliance with Real ID potentially impacts millions
of the states residents. Without a passport or
military ID, South Carolina drivers licenses will
be insufficient identification to access areas
with heightened security.
Impacts here in Aiken County are especially
significant since were home to the Savannah
River Site, which conducts public tours and
hosts occasional public events. SRS employees,
though, would not be affected.
Entry into Fort Gordon in nearby Augusta and
other military bases would be similarly restrict-
ed. In a more practical sense, residents lacking
proper IDs would be prohibited from boarding
a plane or entering a federal building, including
federal courthouses.
Though lethargic in addressing this quanda-
ry, S.C. lawmakers made the right move by not
forcing all residents to get new IDs.
House Bill 3358 makes compliance voluntary,
which distinguishes it from Georgia, which
made Real ID compliance mandatory. S.C. state
lawmakers say mandatory compliance created
many headaches for Georgians. Voluntary com-
pliance, they say, increases flexibility for resi-
dents. We agree.
Voluntary compliance will help limit the mob
scenes we anticipate at local departments of
motor vehicles as drivers race to update their
licenses.

newspaper last summer, local
residents have expressed their

your means
Q: My wife and I are
debt-free except for our
home, and were on Baby
Steps 4 and 5. Recently,
we were asked to make a
large donation to a charity
we already support. We
dont have the full cash
amount they asked for on
hand, and after hearing
that, they said we could
make monthly installment
payments until the dona-
tion amount was paid in
full. Were hesitant to do
this because it seems a bit
like debt to us. What do
you think?
DR: Well, its not debt.
There would be no re-
percussions, other than
guilt, if you couldnt make
the full donation. So, its
not debt. To be honest
though, I dont engage in
that kind of stuff when it
comes to giving.
My wife and I do all our
giving except for our
tithe to our local church
through our family
foundation. Sometimes
well do this giving in a
couple of installments,
but its not because we
dont have the money.
Its generally a situation
where were walking with
the charity or ministry
throughout the year,
and were observing and
assessing the need.
Id be hesitant to give
a gift when I dont have
the money. Most of the
time, approaches like this
fall under the heading of
manipulation. Youre be-
ing pushed beyond your
means. Most giving of this
type, biblically speaking,
would be from surplus.
And right now, you dont
have the surplus.
Im kind of uncomfort-
able with this. I dont
engage in making gift
promises beyond what I
have. Its not debt, but it
kind of starts to feel like
it, and its not so much
living beyond your means
as it is giving beyond your
means. Thats just anoth-
er reason it doesnt strike
the right chord with me.

Q: I am 18 years old and
homeschooled. I want to
continue my education
this fall, and my dad
works at a college near
our home. I would get free
tuition, but theres anoth-
er college farther from
home that I like just as
much but its more ex- er is an original member
pensive. On the plus side,
it is a Christian school,
and my faith is important
to me. What do you think
I should do?
DR: Free tuition is a
major plus in my book.
At the same time, I can
understand your desire
to get out from under
mom and dads wings a
little bit. Just dont make
the mistake of thinking
that a school, church or
anything else is com-
pletely Christian. Youll
meet some of the wildest
characters ever at a Chris-
tian school, just like you
would at a public univer-
sity. However, you would
have the advantage of a
built-in spiritual support
network.
All things considered,
and since you mentioned
your faith specifically,
Id probably choose the
Christian school. But I
wouldnt go into debt to
make it happen. Theres
absolutely no reason why
you cant work and go to
school at the same time.
Pay it as you go. I did it,
and I finished with good
grades in four years. Its a
little bit harder way to go,
but its a lot better than
ending up with a ton of
student loan debt when
youre through!

picked up three wins
during a Spring Break
tournament in Easley last
week, topping Emerald
(4-1), West Oak (6-2) and
Southside Christian (4-3).
The Jackets only loss of
the tournament came to
Laurens (9-6).

The Lady Rebels recent-
ly exacted some revenge
against Boiling Springs,
moving to 5-2 in region
play and 15-5 overall.
The Byrnes softball
teams only two confer-
ence losses came to the
Bulldogs earlier this year,
but a 2-1 during Spring
Break puts the Rebels sol-
idly in second place.
We will mostly likely
still finish second behind
them in the region, but I
feel like the win will help,
head coach Brandi Aiken
said. We should see them
again in the playoffs.
Last week, Byrnes partic-
ipated in the AzaleaTour-
nament in Summerville,
where the Rebels lost to
Berkeley, but picked up
wins over Cane Bay, Na-
tion Ford and Hanahan.
I felt like we got a lot
out of playing against
teams we are not familiar
with, Aiken said.
The Lady Rebels hosted
Union on Thursday, win-
ning 5-3.
Union is a strong team
and we had a great crowd
so it was very similar to
a playoff game atmo-
sphere, Aiken said.
We really are starting
to play well all the way
around, especially on de-

has started to pitch more

Marion Reeves was just
like many girls growing
up in the Upstate. She was
friendly, athletic, popu-
lar, and healthy. But when
Reeves turned 13 years
old, she began to be con-
cerned with her appear-
anceas many teenagers

became an unhealthy ob-
session that would spiral
out of control and take
over her teen years.
Now, the 2015 Eastside
High graduate has a story
to tell and a desire to help
those who also struggle
with eating disorders and
depression.
In her book, Perfectly
Imperfect, Reeves pres-
ents an honest and raw
look into her diseasethe
obsession, deception, re-
covery, relapse, depres-
sion, and victory that con-
sumed her tender teenage

Were there times when
I wanted to stop? Yes.
But I physically couldnt,

Stretching helps ease
spinal stenosis pain
DEAR DR. ROACH: My
wife suffered from spinal
stenosis. She had a corti-
sone shot, which helped
for 90 days. She had reg-
ular physical therapy
meetings. She was in con-
stant pain, but insisted on
playing tennis (against her
doctors wishes).
Then, we happened to
vacation for a month in
Florida, and one of the
offered activities was a
stretch workout. She in-
sisted that she wanted to
try it. After the very first
time she thought she felt
a little better. She went
to several more sessions,
and finally asked the train-
er what she could buy to
keep it up at home.
The trainer suggested a
stretching DVD. It takes
about an hour to com-
plete it, and she now does
it three times a week. She
plays hard tennis five days
a week, hasnt complained
about pain since 2010,
and hasnt needed any
physical therapy, either. I
continue to be amazed.
Certainly this kind of
therapy cant hurt any-
one, since you do it only
to your personal comfort
levels. Perhaps you might
mention this type of ther-
apy in your column some-
time. It worked miracles
for us at virtually no cost.

rare cancer. Liver flukes
are a risk factor, and so
is a condition called pri-
mary sclerosing cholangi-
tis, a condition associated
with ulcerative colitis. The
cancer is rare but high-
ly lethal, because by the
time symptoms show up,
the cancer usually is ad-
vanced.
Also because of its rar-
ity, screening for the can-
cer in a general population
wont be effective. Howev-
er, for people at high risk,
such as those with PSC
or a history of liver par-
asites, at least one study
has shown that screening
with a blood test (CA 19-9,
CEA) or by endoscopy can
be effective. It would be
reasonable to speak with
the expert taking care of
this problem, usually a
gastroenterologist, about
screening.
