TITLE OF FILM

As a group we all thought Exitus alongside the public vote would be the best
title for our horror thriller. We believed this paired well with the codes and
conventions as it is a short title that is memorable like other well-known
thrillers such as Insidious, Ouji and Cape Fear. All these titles fitting together
to create a persona of danger and mystery to entice the audience to watch
them. Therefore Exitus meaning escape in Latin as it played on the
pronunciation of the letter X to give it a sinister tone, carrying the audiences
expectation. It also reinforces the narrative of our thriller as the audience is
visually presented with our main character of the little girl
appear lost and running away from an unknown character

The title font and style are simple but effective and
easily read by the audience, the colours chosen
contrast the location of the particular shot to make it
as clear as possible for the audience. This is
positioned towards the bottom of the shots so it
doesnt distract the audience and enables them to
continue viewing our opening scene however allowing
them to gain and idea of who is involved within the
making of our thriller. This paired with the soundtrack
chosen to provide the opening scene with an eerie
and unsettling persona, giving the audience a sense
of what to expect and foreshadowing their expectations, making sure it
corresponded with the codes and conventions.

SETTING AND LOCATION

For our location we chose a wooden area as this is present within many
thrillers to give out the aimed response of fear by the audience. The woods
being a stereotypical setting/location for a horror thriller there coordinating
with the codes and conventions nicely, the reasoning behind this chosen
location as it possess the most effect when building tension and carries a
spooky representation of isolation and vulnerability. Our second location
consisting of a train station where the flashback will take
place, and the narrative begins to build and become
clearer. We made sure to plan on a day that to our
knowledge it was going to be a dull and cloudy day to
reinforce the atmosphere, filming days only taking place
within school hours to eliminate the chances of continuity
that would require extra filming days so we could focus on
editing as this was time consuming in making sure we
produced the best possible product.

PROPS AND COSTUME

The prop and costume usage was kept simple
to give the uncanny atmosphere and allow the
audience to focus on the narrative. The
connotations of the long white gown like dress
suggests purity and vulnerability to contrast
the dark tone of our thriller. The colour white of
the dress become visually pleasing to the
audience as the colours associated with horrors are darks such as black
and deep reds. A prop that stands out to the audience is our character
holding a stuffed animal, this reinforces the age of the little girl and
portrays the innocence she possess.

CAMERA WORK AND EDITING

We tried to use as many as different camera shots
as possible to enhance the viewing experience by
the audience. Ranging of shots from wide shots to
extreme close ups, this enhances the experience
and adds depth. The use of particular shots pushes
the audience focus on particular shots of interest.
The use of extreme close ups were used to
extenuate the features of our main character of
the little girl to expose the physical and mental
state she is in and the demonic oddity of our
thriller. Wide shots were important within the
making of our thriller as the audience followed her
making it clear that she was escaping from something or someone. The
use of the wide shot also allowed to show the detachment from reality and
seclusiveness of her surroundings. We used the cross cutting technique to
suggest the passing of time and to avoid lengthy shots that could possible
bore the audience. Furthermore using rapid editing when the girl is laying
on the floor itching alongside uncontrollable movements to appear in an
infernal state, this paired with an high angled shot so show her being
overpowered. Retaining the typical theme for a thriller film.

GENRE AND HOW THE OPENING SCENE

SUGGESTS IT
The main character of the little girl is an ordinary girl as we see within the
flashback featured within our opening scene, here the audience can relate to
the character. Being kidnapped and tested within an institution she becomes
fascinated by the outside world and escapes. The unidentified character the
audience meets briefly is assigned to retrieve the girl before she causes harm
to herself or to others. The opening scenes sets up our story as the audience
are introduced the main character quickly allowing the audience to make
assumption and judge the character first-hand. The location being distinctly
shown setting the tone of our
thriller.

STORY AND HOW THE OPENING SETS

IT UP
The opening of our thriller begins with our
distributing company shown, being universal
pictures while a yellow daffodil as this
symbolizes rebirth and new beginnings. This
effectively contrasts the dark ambiance of our
thriller. This is then followed by shots that
establish the location to the audience, with the
wind blowing could possibly foreshadow what is later to come acting as
a metaphor for danger that may later arise. This immediately tells the
audience the genre of our film as it carries the appropriate theme and
codes of conventions of a thriller. These techniques are used to excite
the audience and make it appear they are on edge. Close up of props
that would suggest to be owned by a little girl fit nicely with the theme
of a thriller as many consist of a victim. The music has an eerier feel
which reinforce these codes and conventions, used to unsettle the
audience and have doubt that something is going to go wrong. The use
of the music being in sync and on action within our thriller was
important to give it the professional feel we were aiming for.

HOW THE CHARACTERS ARE

INTRODUCED
Our girl is the main character in Exitus as
she motivates the editing and has the
most shots. Being the main focus as she
has escaped from her institution and has
no knowledge of the outside world. She is
introduced swiftly as young girls are
presented in many thrillers as victims
however our character being the threat.
We decided to conform to the codes and
conventions within thrillers with limited or
no dialogue. With no dialogue it allows the
audience to engage further within our
thriller and the narrative, it also allows the music to have more of an
effect as the audience rely of this to build suspense successfully and
create enigma around our thriller.
