Daily Lesson Plan (Template)

Name: Melissa Tetreault Date: January

26, 2017

Subject: Math Topic:

Pythagorean Theorem and Scientific
Notation

Grade: 8 (FLEX Period) Length of

Lesson: 45 minutes

Introduction (Essential Question):

How can the Pythagorean Theorem be helpful in solving problems?
Standard: Geometry
Expressions and Equations
Cluster: Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem
Work with radicals and integer exponents
Objective:
M.8.22: Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right
triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

M.8.6: Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including

problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and
choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities.
(e.g., Use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading.) Interpret scientific notation that has
been generated by technology.

Specific Objective: Students will demonstrate how the use the Pythagorean Theorem to
determine unknown side lengths of a given right triangle, and perform operations with
numbers expressed in both scientific and standard notation. The successful student will
score 80% or higher on written assessment as recorded in teacher records.

Method(s): video, whole group discussion, independent work

Materials:
Calculators
Quiz
1
Pencils and scratch paper
CNN student news/Channel 1

Direct Instruction:
Students will be instructed to get calculators, scratch paper, and a pencil.

Guided Practice:
Students will be given a quiz on the Pythagorean Theorem and Scientific Notation. I will read the directions,
and answer last minute questions.

Independent Practice:
The students will complete the quiz and submit it by the end of the class. If the entire class finishes and there is
time left, the students will watch CNN or Channel 1 news.

Lesson Closure:
Students will put away materials and submit their quiz. I will remind students that they will attend
advisor/advisee in lieu of class tomorrow.

Assessment:

Summative: The students will be given a quiz on the Pythagorean Theorem and Scientific Notation. The
successful student will score an 80% or higher on assessment as recorded in teacher records.

Lesson Reflection:

What parts of this lesson worked? What didnt work? What classroom management problems occurred, if any?
What surprising/teachable moments happened, if any?

notation. The successful student will score 80% or higher on written assessment as
recorded in teacher records.

Direct Instruction:
The focus of the lesson is a review of scientific notation and standard notation. The class will begin with a
review of how to convert numbers to both scientific and standard notation. The following examples will be
written on the board:

Example 1:

Example 2:

Guided Practice:
Example 1: Adding in scientific notation
The following will be drawn on the SmartBoard:

With student input through whole class discussion, the students will review how to add numbers written in
scientific notation.

Example 2: Subtracting in scientific notation

The following will be drawn on the SmartBoard:

With student input through whole class discussion, the students will review how to subtract numbers written in
scientific notation.

Example 3: Multiplying in scientific notation

The following will be drawn on the SmartBoard:

With student input through whole class discussion, the students will review how to multiply numbers written in
scientific notation.

Example 4: Dividing in scientific notation

The following will be drawn on the SmartBoard:

With student input through whole class discussion, the students will review how to divide numbers written in
scientific notation.

Independent Practice:
The students will complete the attached problems independently. The students will be instructed to complete
their work on a separate sheet of paper and to show all work. The students will be permitted to use calculators.

Lesson Closure:
The students will turn in the problems whether they have finished them all or not. The problems will be
reviewed during the following class period. If all students have finished and time permits, I will review the
answers and correct any misunderstandings. The papers will be collected and graded for participation. If time
permits, the students will watch CNN/ Channel 1 news.

Assessment:
Formative: The students will be assessed through observations and responses during class.
Summative: The students will be given a quiz on Thursday on the Pythagorean Theorem and Scientific
Notation. The successful student will score an 80% or higher on assessment as recorded in teacher records.
