Dear MSU Upward Bound Students and Parents:

We are writing to update you on plans for Upward Bound. We are pleased to announce
that MSU is doubling its financial commitment to our partnership with the Lansing School
District to create an Upward Bound MSU program. This new program will enable the vital
services that had been supported largely by federal funds in the past to continue while we
await the chance to submit for renewed federal funding.

The new Upward Bound MSU will provide intensive school-year tutoring, an on-campus
summer academic program including a one-week residential component, and a summer
enrichment study trip for participating Lansing high school students. These are the
elements that have proven successful in the past, and their continuation will ensure that
our students have the encouragement and preparation necessary to successfully apply to
and succeed in college.

Scheduling details are being finalized, and you will receive information shortly on how to
sign up for this new program.

Finally, we are grateful to members of the campus and Lansing communities who have
asked how they can help in maintaining the program, and all funds or support raised from
these sources will go directly to providing additional support for our students.

Sincerely,

R. Sekhar Chivukula, MSU Associate Provost for
