Experiment no:

Objective: To investigate the whirling speed of an unloaded

shaft with fixed-fixed ends.

Apparatus:
A sturdy extruded base frame houses the driving motor, self-
aligning bearings, safety cover and test shafts. Due to the use
of thin, elastic rotor shafts made of high-strength steel; the
oscillatory phenomena can be easily understood.

Theory:
The whirling or critical speed is the speed at which resonance
occurs.
In the field of rotor dynamics, the critical speed is the
theoretical angular velocity excites the natural frequency of a
rotating object, such as a shaft, propeller or gear. As the speed
of rotation approaches the objects natural frequency, the object
begins to resonate which dramatically increases system
vibration. The resulting resonance occurs regardless of
orientation.
Whirling Speed is due to the unbalanced forces acting on a
rotating shaft.

Procedure:
1. Adjust the apparatus according to requirements support a
shaft with both ends fixed
2. Increase the speed of the shaft by varying voltage.
3. Observe the transverse vibrations in the shaft.
4. Measure the speed of the rotating shaft with tachometer
at the maximum deflection of the shaft. Note the value of
first and second whirl
5. Attachable bearing block should be attached to the end
support. Test specimen is attached fully into the support shaft
before sliding the bearing block over the shaft and securing to
the end support.
6. After the experiment turn off the speed control unit.
