a) develop an awareness that a map is a drawing of a place to show
where things are located
and that a globe is a round model of the Earth;
b) describe places referenced in stories and real-life situations;
c) locate land and water features.

Activity Procedure
Introduction 1. Show students a globe, ask if anyone knows what it is?
of Maps & What it is a model of?
Globes 2. Point out different continents; let students know the green
and brown areas are land
3. Point out water; let students know the blue areas
represent water
4. Show students map of USA, ask if anyone knows what it
is? Tell them its a map of America. Point out Virginia.
5. Show students map of Virginia. Point out Abingdon and
Bristol
6. Show students weather map
Google 1. Show students the Earth. Point out the land features and
Earth water features. Ask if this would be a map or globe? Talk
about outer space and stars surrounding Earth.
2. Zoom in closer on North America. Tell students this is
where USA is located.
3. Zoom in closer on USA. Ask students if they know what
this is? Is it a map or globe? Point out different states.
4. Zoom in closer on Virginia. Ask students if they know
what this is? Is it a map or globe? Point out well known
cities in the Commonwealth.
5. Zoom in closer on Southwest Virginia. Point out
Abingdon and Bristol.
6. Go to elementary school. Ask students if they know what
this is? Have them point out different features.
Playground? Bus line? Car pick up line?
7. Show students well known places around the world
a. Statue of Liberty
b. White House
c. Lincoln Memorial
d. Eiffel Tower
e. Great Wall of China
i. Talk about the differences and similarities of
these places compared to where students
live.
