It was a fun-filled day packed with traditional games and activities for 56 under-privileged children who were invited to the Japanese Cultural Day in conjunction with the children’s summer festival or Kodomo Natsu Matsuri in Japan. The day was dedicated to nurturing the spirit of togetherness and educating the children on Japanese cultural traditions through games and activities. The children between the ages of seven and 15 came from Rumah Hope, Rumah Shalom and Rumah Amal Suci Rohani and Rumah Jagaan Kanak-Kanak Pure Life. The day kicked off with the famous Rajio Taiso or morning workouts to music from the radio. After a light breakfast, the children were given a Japanese passport each to write notes, answer a simple quiz about Japanese traditions and collect colourful stamps indicating their participation in the day’s activities. From folding origami, learning the art of ayatori (rope-game) and the challenging kendama (ball looping) the children had an enjoyable time exploring ways to enhance their creativity. They also had the opportunity to put their talent to the-test in kami hikoki or the game of paper planes, challenging each other to see who could build the strongest plane that could fly the furthest. They were given the chance to dress in Japanese traditional wear. The event was organised by the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi which wanted to give the children a valuable experience of Japanese traditions and culture, The children certainly had an amazing journey leaming about Japanese traditions while the volunteers enjoyed guiding them, The bank’s previous corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects include building orchards by planting fruit trees for the Klang Special School and beautifying it by applying new paint and cleaning up the school compound and donating bookshelves and books to a public school’s library.
