Whats the skill?

Targeted NASPE Standard(s): NASPE Standards 1, 2, 4, 5, 6

Specific Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to provide 3
examples of locomotor skills (3 ways to get your heart rate up)
Concomitant Objective: The students will stay physically active while listening to
directions.

Time Procedures Followed Materials


Transition:
15 -Good morning class! When I say go, I need everyone to

-Set induction given there

Warm Up:
30 -Since we will be using our bodies to create movement

today, we are just going to stretch our legs
-Grab your right leg and hold for 5 seconds
-Grab your left leg and hold for 5 seconds

1 -With their toes on the green line

-What are some things we can do to get our heart rates
up? (locomotor skills, running, jumping, skipping)
-Why are the benefits of getting your heart rate up? it
gets blood flowing to your brain and to your muscles to
re-energize you!
-Can someone give me a name of a locomotor skill (3)
-Great! Locomotor skills involve our feet moving our
bodies from one place to another.
-Locomotor skills are those movements that get our
heart rates up
-Well that is what we will be practicing today, because
we will be playing a game called Whats the skill (insert
students name)? that is a lot like the game What time
is it Mr. Fox.
-Explain Learnable Piece

Learnable Piece:
30 -Your goal today is to learn 3 examples of locomotor

skills.
Examples: Running, skipping, jumping
Presentation of New Material/Directions:
2 -Once students attention is gained, then explain

-Whats the skill is about asking the gym teacher what
locomotor skill they will be performing to get their heart
rates up. There will be one gym teacher that stands with
their back facing the class in the middle of the gym at
half court. (ask for volunteer).
-The rest of the class will stand on the green line and
ask, Whats the skill (insert students name)?
-The student acting as the gym teacher will call out a
number and then say a locomotor skill that we had
talked about in the set induction. Ex: 4 jumps
-The rest of the class will do the locomotor skill however
many times the skill and number was called out.
-When the gym teacher feels as if other students are
close their back, he/she can call out RECESS and the
rest of the class will try to run back to the green line
without getting tagged.
-Your goal is to not get tagged
-The student who gets tagged will be the new gym
teacher.
-SAFETY:
Everyone will be doing a locomotor skill in a
forward motion and running back to the green line
at the same time so you need to watch out for
your neighbors and be aware of your
surroundings
Shoving is not allowed
-Checking for understanding:
When do you run back to the green line?
How do you know what skill and how many to do?
Transition:
2 -Gym teacher stands in the middle of the gym with
