Flipped Lesson Plan

Sherri Anderson

Lesson Title: Perimeter and Area

Subject: Math

Level: 4th Grade

Standard: MGSE4.MD.3 Apply the area and perimeter formulas for

rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.

Objective: Find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the
flooring and the length

Step 1: Students gain familiarity with new material before class

What instructional materials and resources will you use for students to
familiarize themselves with the content prior to class?

The student will complete the following activities prior to class to familiarize
themselves with the measurement of area and perimeter.

Step 2: Activities that motivate students to prepare before class

What kinds of activities will motivate students and prepare them for class?
What questions will I ask students? What should students be able to do to
prepare?

Students could ask a parent to assist them with measuring an area of a

carpet or the floor (using masking tape) in a room at the house.
Activities include:

Students will measure an area of the carpet using masking tape

Students will practice perimeter and area word problems using Moby
Max
Students will assist teacher with explaining perimeter and area to
other students

Opening questions include:

Could anyone explain what Im talking about when I say perimeter?

Could anyone explain what Im talking about when I say area?
In what ways could you use the measurements at your home? In
class?
How did you measure the rug at your house? Explain.

Upon completion of this lesson, students will:

Be able to calculate the area and perimeter formula for rectangles
Be able to apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real
world and mathematical problems

of a carpet or the floor (using masking tape) in a room at the
house.
If students have a pet, students could measure the perimeter and
area of the pets home

Step 3: In-class activities that provide students opportunities to

deepen understanding

What kind of in-class activities will focus students to attain higher-level

cognitive abilities?

Classroom Activities
Materials: Masking Tape, Yard Stick, Pencil, Paper, Recording Sheet,
KWL Chart (What I know, What I wonder, What I learned)
Students will measure an area of the carpet using masking tape
Calculating area and perimeter using (cut up) plastic straw
Using cereal to calculate area and perimeter
Place students in small groups to complete activities
All proficient students to assist with lower achieving students

Step 6: Assessment

How will you evaluate students learning and progress?

Assessment
Formative/Summative
Challenging questions
Interactive quizzes

Formative: teacher observation, KWL charts, student work samples i.e

Allow small groups to explain to class how they measure area and perimeter,
group interviews
Summative: Complete the Math Slice practice quiz:
