CourseDescription
Helloall!WelcometoDiverseVoicesinLiterature,amandatorycourseforSeniors.Thiscourse
isdesignedtorepresentallgroupsofpeople,includingmarginalizedandoppressedgroups.Itis
meanttochallengethetypicalideaofclassicalliteratureandintroducemoreinclusivepieces
writtenbyauthorsfromamultitudeofbackgrounds.Inthisclass,wewilltrytoforgeabrave
spacefordialogueandencourageparticipationfromtheentireclass.Theclasswillbesplitinto
fourgroupsbasedonthenovelstheychoose;thisprocesswillrepeatthreetimestoscramble
groupsandcreatenewenvironments.Eachweektwodayswillbedevotedtolecture/largegroup
andtheotherthreewillbeinthenoveldiscussiongroup.Alargeportionofyourgradewillbe
basedonpaperswrittenaboutthesocialjusticeissuesaddressedthroughthenovelsweread.
Otherwise,attendance,quizzes,classparticipation,andhomeworkwillmakeuptherest.

youhavereadthisyearintoa56pagepaper.Allfourchosennovelshaveelementsofsocial
justicethatshouldbereflectedinyourwork.Promptswillbegivenforthefinalpaperatleasta
monthinadvance.Thefinalpapershouldincludetwoacademicscholarlypapersassources,as
wellasquotesfromthenovels.Pleaseincludeabibliographyandatitlepage.TheusualTimes
NewRoman,doublespaced,standardmargins,MLAwillberequired.

GroupProject:Eachgroupwillalsopresenttheirnoveltotheclassintheformofvisualmedia
suchasabooktrailer/powerpoint/artwork/other.Thiswillallowtheclasstohearasummaryof
yournovelwithoutreadingit.Groupsarealsoexpectedtoincludeliteraryelementssuchas
themes,motifs,imagery,style,tone,etc.Anyelementsofthebookthatrelatetoitssocialjustice
impactandhowitdiffersfromclassicliterature.

DailyHomework:Thiswillbeupdatedontheboardweekly.Somequizzeswillbegivenwitha
warninginadvance,otherquizzeswillbepopquizzes!Mostdailyhomeworkwillbereadings
foryourchosennovel,withsomeinclusionofotheracademicsources/articles.
