Dictionary regarding Psychiatric Comorbidity

1. Comorbidity: The simultaneous presence of two or more


psychiatric conditions in one individual.
2. Mental Illness: A condition that affects a persons thinking,
feeling, or mood and impair functioning.
3. Major Depressive Disorder: a mood disorder involving one or
more episodes of psychological depression lasting two or more weeks.
4. Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A psychiatric disorder
characterized by excessive worry about several aspects of life.
5. Social Anxiety Disorder: A person has an intense fear of being
criticised or humiliated in social situations.
6. Phobia Disorder: A disorder involving the person being extremely
fearful of a specific object or situation and making great efforts to
avoid it.
7. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): A psychiatric condition
that arises after a traumatic event, involving flashbacks regarding the
event.
8. Panic Disorder: A psychiatric condition involving intense panic
attacks and uncontrollable anxiety. Often accompanied by physical
symptoms such as difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, chest pain and
sweating.
9. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): A psychiatric condition
involving intrusive and uncontrollable thoughts (obsessions) and
behaviors carried out to relieve that anxiety (compulsions).
10. Bipolar Disorder: A psychiatric condition characterized by
extended periods of depression followed by extended periods of mania
in a repetitive cycle.
11. Antisocial Personality Disorder: a psychiatric condition in
which a person has a long-term pattern of manipulating, exploiting, or
violating the rights of others.
12. Borderline Personality Disorder: a serious mental disorder
marked by a pattern of ongoing instability in moods, behavior, self-
image, and functioning
13. Narcissistic Personality Disorder: a psychiatric condition
where people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep
need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others
14. Anorexia Nervosa: a mental disorder involving an
overwhelming desire to lose weight. Often leads to restriction of food
intake or excessive exercise.
15. Bulimia Nervosa: A mental disorder involving an
overwhelming desire to lose weight leading to binge-purge cycles.
16. Binge Eating Disorder: A mental disorder characterized by
consuming large amounts of food and feeling out of control during a
binge episode.
17. Substance Abuse Disorder: A mental illness involving the
abuse of drugs or alcohol.
18. Autism: a psychiatric condition characterized by difficulty
in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in
using language and abstract concepts. Usually present in early
childhood.
19. Asperger Syndrome: A psychiatric condition similar to
Autism involving difficulty in social interaction and nonverbal
communication.
20. Insomnia: A sleep disorder characterized by a persistent
inability to sleep even when presented with appropriate conditions.
21. Hyper-insomnia: A sleep disorder involving excessive
daytime sleepiness and the inability to sleep at night.
22. Narcolepsy: A sleep disorder involving tendencies to fall asleep at
inappropriate times and situations.
