Teachers of struggling readers should first build rapport with students to understand their perspective and gain trust. They should then set a clear purpose for reading to motivate students by explaining how it connects to other subjects and success. Teachers should provide choice in engaging reading material and use assessments to identify specific needs, celebrate growth, and gradually release responsibility to students as they internalize reading strategies around vocabulary and comprehension.

1. Rapport- Learn and connect with students to gain their trust.
Teachers are here to help and lead them to success. How do they see themselves as readers and what about reading is important to them?
2. Purpose- Set a purpose for learning how to read
independently. Make it clear that reading is a base for all subject areas that will help students see the big picture and set themselves up for success.
3. Choice- Give a choice of real reading material that is important
to that reader and is engaging for them, be it traditional books or digital material.
4. Assess- Use multiple assessments to determine the area of
need for the student. Use their growth as an indicator of success and celebrate those accomplishments.
5. G.R.R.- Teach the strategy that is needed from their
assessments and gradually releasing that responsibility to the reader so they can be independent and eventually internalize that strategy to use in their reading. Including teaching vocabulary and monitoring comprehension in all lessons.
