FROM FATHER RICH
Pray inwardly,
Though you sense nothing
Though you see nothing
Though you think you can achieve nothing
For in dryness and in barrenness
In sickness and in feebleness
Then is your prayer completely pleasing to me
Though it seems to give you little pleasure
And so all your living is prayer in my eyes.

Today’s liturgy presents Abraham’s beautiful prayer, interceding for the residents of Sodom and Gomor-
rah. According to this story, we can understand the difference between prayers, which we recite from our
memories, and prayers, which are conversations with God.
Abraham repeats the same request six times, each time more courageously, lowering the number of the in-
nocent, which he tried to find in the threatened cities. This was not a recited prayer, but a conversation with
God.
Jesus prayed the same way. The Apostles, seeing Him, asked Him to teach them how to talk with the Father.
As Jesus taught them the “Our Father”, He emphasized the simplicity of the prayer. He wanted them, just as
Abraham, to pray with a few words and with much confidence and intensity to get what they asked for.
Life decides on the contents of our prayer. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where from morning
until night, at home and in church, on the streets and in the stores, at work and at rest, we repeat the same
request: “Father, Thy will be done”. This is an adaptation for our will and the Father’s will.
In other situations, when a person feels guilty, he implores through prayer: “Father, forgive us our tres-
passes”. This prayer repeated daily leads a person to confess his sins, to repent, and to amend his life.
In another situation, when the person is tempted to sin, the heart calls: “Lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil”. This prayer helps us to avoid sin.
Prayer should be genuine because only then, it brings us closer to God and leads us to meet with Him. Pray-
ing in this way, a person speaks less and listens more to God. Only this type of a prayer forms a person’s
heart, transforms him, and he transforms the world.
God Bless! Fr. Rich

SAINT MARTHA (First Century July 29)

Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or annoying, she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes Mar-
tha—saint, not Stewart—as “burdened with much serving” (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to Jesus,
Martha complained, “Do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?” Jesus’ response,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things . . . Mary has chosen the better part” (10:41,
42), suggests to some the superiority of the contemplative life, leaving the rest of us, supporting families, earning
livings, (helping others?), as “second-class” Christians. But Luke introduces Martha and Mary immediately after
Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, whom Jesus recommends as a model of practical compassion, concluding,
“Go and do likewise” (10:37). Go and do! Sit and listen! Discipleship is never either/or but both/and. Jesus min-
istered in prayerful silence and hospitable service. Monastic calendars add Martha’s sister Mary and brother
Lazarus, calling all three “hosts of the Lord,” recalling their welcome of Jesus to their home in Bethany, remind-
ing us Whom we welcome whenever we extend summertime hospitality! —Peter Scagnelli, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

OD KS. RYSZARDA
Liturgia słowa dzisiejszej niedzieli przedstawia piękną modlitwę Abrahama
wstawiającego się za mieszkańcami Sodomy i Gomory. W oparciu o ten tekst
można zrozumieć różnicę między modlitwą a pacierzem. Pacierz składa się z
wielu tekstów pobożnych, które trzeba odrecytować. Modlitwa natomiast to
poważna rozmowa z Bogiem na ściśle określony temat.
Abraham właściwie powtarza sześć razy tę samą prośbę coraz odważniej,
zmniejszając liczbę sprawiedliwych, których chciał szukać w zagrożonych
miastach.
Taka
modlitwa wzywa do wysiłku, by z okazją do grzechu zerwać, by jeszcze ściślej współpracować
z Bogiem.
Modlitwa powinna być autentyczna, bo tylko wtedy zbliża ona do Boga, prowadzi do spotkania
z Nim. Człowiek wówczas waży każde słowo i znacznie więcej słucha niż mówi. Tylko taka modlitwa
kształtuje ludzkie serce, tylko taka jest twórcza. Tylko taka modlitwa przemienia człowieka,
a człowiek przemienia świat.

Siostra pielęgniarka uspokaja przed operacją 7 - letnią dziewczynkę:

Nie bój się!
Dostaniesz kilka kropelek lekarstwa do twojego noska i zaśniesz.
A kiedy się obudzisz, będziesz całkiem zdrowa.
Proszę siostry - odpowiada dziecko - my się w domu, przed snem z mamusią i tatusiem modlimy.
