Adapted for the Principles of Effective Pedagogy
Grade: 4th Subject: Math Authors: Jack OFlaherty
Duration: 11:00-11:45 Date(s) February 12, 2017
Title of Lesson & its Placement in the Unit: Developing a routine. Conceptual
learning of division and fractions.

Connection to Students:
Matthew loves games. For the warmup activity Im going to use the game Connect
4 as a warm up multiplication and addition exercise.
Learning Objectives: Conceptually be Assessments: We will build week by
able to understand how fractions add up week on what we learned previously. If
to a whole as well as learn about division Matthew isnt ready because of him
strategies and real world application. unable to perform the allotted activities
correctly then we wont move on.
Content: Student will be able to use 2
different strategies for multiplication and Content: Matthew will be able to use 2

Language: Student will be able to tell Language: Matthew will know the

Social/Affective: Matthew will be open
Social/Affective: Student will have to speak to me about anything. I will try
authentic conversations with me about to facilitate the conversation towards

5 min- Reflect on what we went over five chocolate bars that are each split
today. Tells me what he learned from into 6 pieces equaling a total of 30
the lesson and what he wants to work on pieces of chocolate. He will need to
next time. figure out how to split those pieces up
evenly with 5 people. I will facilitate the
learning by asking questions like How
would you split that to make sure
everyone has the same amount?
15 min- Building a number line. I will
bring a sheet of paper sectioned out into
a whole, , , and so one to compare
fractions to a whole. I will hopefully be
able to find fraction bars for Matthew to
use. We will compare fractions and also
work on getting the same common
denominator by asking 1/2+2/4=? and
other similar questions.

End
5 min-Reflect on the lesson. What did
you like about our meeting? What do you
want to do next time? Is there anything
I can do to better your experience with
me?
Principles of Effective Pedagogy
A student and teacher will work together for the games (JPA)
The students will have to use math skills to solve real world problems, garnering a
deeper understanding (CA)
Differentiation:
Matthew wanted to work on fractions but struggles to see the similarities between
fractions with a different denominator. The building a number line game will put
some perspective around it, as well as open his mind to finding the least common
denominator. Matthew also expressed interest in learning real world division. This
is what the chocolate bar game will emulate.
