Title: Building Blocks of Cells
Grade: 7th

Materials Needed:
Microscopes
Microscope slides
Disposable scrapers
Methylene blue
Coverslips
Pre-made plant cell slides
Venn diagram worksheets
Enlarged images of plant and animal cells
Enlarged images of cell organelles

State Standard: GLE 0707.1.1 Make observations and describe the structure and function of
organelles found in plant and animal cells.

Goals:
The student will make observations about plant and animal cells using microscopes.
The student will be able to describe the structure and function of organelles found in plant
and animal cells.
The student will be able to discern which organelles are only found in certain types of
cells. (Cell wall is only found in plant cells)
The student will use a Venn diagram to keep facts straight about which organelles are
only found in a plant or animal cell.
The students will look at their cheek cells and plant cells on microscope slides and
identify visible organelles.

Objectives:
The students will use a graphic organizer to keep facts straight about the organelles and
the cells in which they are found.
Students will use a microscope to look at the nuclei and other organelles found in cheek
cells.
Students will use a microscope to look at visible organelles found in plant cells.

Instructional Procedures:
1. As a class, we will discuss that cells are the basic building blocks of life and that
organelles are necessary for cells to perform their duties. This will be accomplished with
the use of enlarged plant and animal cell images.
2. As class, we will discuss what organelles are only found in one type of cell and why it is
special to that type of cell.
3. Students will be given the opportunity to view their own cheek cells and plant cells under
the microscope.
4. Students will complete the Venn diagram activity concerning the organelles and what
type(s) of cell(s) they are found in.
5. Students will be asked comprehensive questions over the material covered in class.
6. Students will submit the Venn diagram at the end of class.

Questions:
(See Blooms Taxonomy assignment)

Closure:
Students will be asked to tell the class about 1 organelle and its function, type(s) of cell(s)
it is found in, and structure.

Adaptations to meet Individual Needs:

Adaptations to the material will be made as necessary, depending on the individual needs
and necessary accommodations of the student.
