Heat Conduction Trainer

Aim:
1. Understand the process of steady-state heat
conduction
2. Experimentally test the thermal conductivity of
different metals
Introduction:
Thermal Conductivity - k - is the quantity of heat transmitted due
to an unit temperature gradient, in unit time under steady
conditions in a direction normal to a surface of the unit area.
Thermal Conductivity - k - is used in the Fourier's equation.

Conductive heat transfer can be expressed with "Fourier's

Law":

q = k A dT / s

where

q = heat transfer (W, J/s, Btu/hr)

A = heat transfer area (m2, ft2)

k = thermal conductivity of material (W/m K or W/m oC,

Btu/(hr oF ft2/ft))

dT = temperature gradient - difference - in the material (K

or oC, oF)
s = material thickness (m, ft)
Technical Description :
This unit is used to investigate steady-state and non steady-
state heat conduction processes. An interchangeable cylindrical
specimen is fitted between a heat source and a heat sink. The
specimen is prefitted with twelve thermocouples distributed
along its length. The electrical heat source is controlled
electronically. The heat sink is water-cooled. The
temperatures of the heat source, cooling water and specimen
are indicated. There are also displays for heating power and
cooling water flow rate. The thermal conductivity can be
calculated using the measured data.
Discussion:
1- Plot the temperature profile along the length of
specimen for (Cu,Al,Ms)

2- What is the principal methods of thermal conductivity

measurement?

Answer: Two classes of methods exist to measure the

thermal conductivity of a sample: steady-state and non-
steady-state (or transient) methods
Steady-state: perform a measurement when the
temperature of the material measured does not change
with time.
Non steady-state: perform a measurement during the
process of heating up

3- The specimen heated indirectly via a water bath,

why?
Answer: A water bath is laboratory equipment made
from a container filled with heated water. It is used to
incubate samples in water at a constant temperature
over a long period of time

4- Why we are using elevated tank?
