SPOTTED HYENA

Natural habitat
They live in Africa and can range in habitats
from grasslands, savannas, woodlands,
deserts, forests and mountains.

Biology
Diet: Antelope, wee bugs, zebras.
(anything over 40 lbs.)
Life Span: In captivity, they can live up
to 25 years and 12 years in the wild.
Adaptations: their strong jaws help then
eat every part of their prey such as bones
and teeth.

Status: least concern.


Gender differences: The female hyena is
bigger and more aggressive than the male.
Behavior
Social: Spotted hyenas are social animals
which live in large communities which can
consist of at most 80 individuals.
Vocalization: Hyenas make a giggle like
sound before they attacking their prey.

Captivity concerns
Food supply: In captivity they eat meat-
based commercial carnivore diet. They also
eat mice, rats, or rabbits once or twice a
week. Treats for training purposes include
beef heart, large rice-based chew bones,
zucchini, cabbage, and carrots.
Animal/Human safety: Moats, electrical
whirring and a fence.
