Semester II 2016/2017

ASSIGNMENT

The demand (q) and saturation flows (S) for a three-phase signalised T-intersection is given
in the table below. Each approach has two lanes. Amber time (a) is 3 sec, all red period (R) is
2 sec and driver reaction time (l) is 3 sec.

Table: Demand and saturation flows (in pcu/hr) for a T-intersection

Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3

ApproachLANE ER EL WR WL NR NL
Demand flow 440 400 530 500 320 290
Saturation flow 1950 2000 1990 2100 1950 1860

Note: E East Approach, W West Approach, N North Approach,

R Right Lane, L Left Lane, pcu = Passenger Car Unit

(a) Determine the optimum cycle time (Co).

(b) Take the cycle time (C) as the optimum cycle time calculated above. Determine the
controller setting time (k) for each phase.

(c) Sketch a timing schedule for one complete cycle.
