Seed Power
From the Pastors Pen
Last year Veronica bought two pots of pansies and put them on the side
porch for a display of color for travelers on Market Street. Eventually, the
pansies dried up and died, and we threw the dirt and plants into the compost
bin. Last month, while planting new roses next to the side porch, I was
pleasantly surprised to see yellow pansies blooming in the midst of the weeds.
Those potted pansies had seeded themselves and grew without any assistance
or encouragement from us. The wind carried the seeds, and the seeds sprouted,
grew, and bloom without human intervention.
The same is often the case with our witness of Christ. We can speak of faith,
say a prayer, or quote a verse to someone and think that it had no effect, but
unknown to us, the spoken word slowly works in the person and helps them
grow in faith and love. Jesus teaches us,
Gods kingdom is like seed thrown on a field by a man who then
goes to bed and forgets about it. The seed sprouts and growshe
has no idea how it happens. The earth does it all without his help:
first a green stem of grass, then a bud, then the ripened grain.
When the grain is fully formed, he reapsharvest time!
(Mark 4:2629, The Message)
Similarly, Isaiah tells us Gods word affects others as assuredly as the falling
of rain and snow. So will the words that come out of my mouth not come back
empty-handed. Theyll do the work I sent them to do, theyll complete the
assignment I gave them. (Isaiah 55:11, The Message.)
Growing the kingdom of God on earth is a matter of planting seeds. The seed
is powerful and fruitful, and will accomplish Gods purposes, and it will
sometimes bear fruit apart from our direct involvement. We may not even
know how God uses it until after we get to heaven. Our responsibility, though,
is not to worry about the result, but to go about scattering the seed. When and
where it grows and how bountiful the fruit are not dependent upon us,
but upon the Holy Spirit.
God uses our good deeds and words even when we dont see it.
Plant your seeds. Make the world a more beautiful, enjoyable, and holy
place.
