EVOLUTION OF CELL PHONES AND THEIR

IMPACT ON COMMUNICATION

Taleaha Barr, Jordan Morrison, and Peyton Mayeski

ICE BREAKER

This icebreaker is used to show

the impacts that cell phones
have on communication.
We are going to play
telephone, while answering
questions on Kahoot, to show
how your full attention cant
be on both the Kahoot and
the message being passed
along.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Discuss the evolution of cell phones over time

Evaluate how each cell phone impacted its era
Determine the disadvantages and advantages of cell phones on
todays society
BEFORE CELL PHONES

Before cell phones were introduced to

society, one of the fastest ways to
communicate was of course with land
lines but also with a pager.
A pager is a wireless telecommunication
device that receives and displays
alphanumeric messages and announces
voice messages.
The first telephone pager system was
patented in 1949 by Alfred J. Gross.
In the 2000, the widespread of
cellphones and smartphones greatly
diminished the pager industry.

During this time these phones were installed in cars,

which can cost from $100 to $250, depending on the
car.
The cell phone made in 1989 was the first real
portable phone. They were mainly installed in cars, thus
keeping people connected on the go.
With the phone being portable it reduced the
face-to-face communication.
Data shows that the majority of cellphone users and
non-cellphone users find that mobile phone use in
public is invasive and disturbs others (Ling, 2004). Disadvantage: Dr. Paul Sherrerd, who has treated patients with

1990S: TEXT MESSAGING

The text message, or SMS (short

message service) is a method of
communication that sends text
between cell phones.
On December 3, 1992, Neil
Papworth sent the first text
message to a mobile phone from
his personal computer to the
Vodafone network to the phone
of Richard Jarvis. The text
message read Merry Christmas.
1990S: TEXT MESSAGING THAN VS. NOW

Mobile messaging is a $251 billion

annual business which has been
tracking mobile messaging markets for
more than a decade (Brenoff, 2013).
The average American user sent 4%
texts per month in 1995. Gradually,
phones and networks adopted to better
accommodate SMS. By 2000, the
average number of text messages sent
in the U.S. increased to 35% a month
per person.

During the nineties, texting

became the main choice of

but mainly for the younger
generation.
People began using them more in

smart phones went from 5%- 10% of
U.S. cell phones.
Smart phones cost about $100 to several
hundred dollars and have higher monthly
subscription costs for data service.
Smart phones, which have Internet,
email, texting, music, videos and touch
screens, have replaced regular cell
phones. Smartphones have accounted for
about 90% of the growth in the number
of U.S. cell phone users over the past
year, 2009.

According to South University
