Component Assembly and Installation Instructions

Front Drive Unit

Mounting the Unit

1. Determine the installation location and position of the Front Drive Unit.
2. Remove the Red Capping from one sidesheet.

Note: The Red Capping needs to be removed so measurements for height adjustments can be
made off the sidesheet.

Release 012510 3-3 1/2010

Assembly and Installation

3. Place the Front Drive Unit into position and adjust the elevation as required by the installation.

Note: For most installations, the correct mounting height of the Front Drive Unit can be
determined by the elevation of the Front Drive Units Sidesheets. The top of the Sidesheet
should be approximately inch (19mm) above the surface of the downstream equipment.

Note: The Front Drive Unit should be positioned no closer than inch (13mm) away from any
downstream equipment. Failure to observe this spacing can result in damage to product and
the equipment!

Note: The Front Drive Unit is shipped factory assembled with Floor Supports. The Floor
Supports may require adjustments to correctly elevate and level the Drive Unit.

4. Verify the elevation and levelness of the Front Drive Unit.

5. Securely anchor the Front Drive Unit into place.
6. Re-attach the Red Capping.

Release 012510 3-4 1/2010

Assembly and Installation
Swapping the Motor and Gearbox Position

Note: The drive unit is provided with the gearbox mounting flange attached to the left side of the drive
unit. It is possible to reverse the position of the gearbox mounting flange so the Motor and Gearbox
attach to the right side of the drive unit.

Note: If gearbox rotation has already been verified, it will be necessary to recheck the rotation after
swapping the position of the Motor and Gearbox.

Note: The conveyor chain must be removed from the drive unit prior to beginning the work.

Note: Be sure to wear all necessary Personal Protective Equipment prior to beginning any work.

Note: Be sure to observe all Lockout-Tagout procedures prior to performing any work on the system.

Release 012510 3-5 1/2010

Lubricating and Installing the Conveyor Chain

Note: The Conveyor Chain should be installed before the gearbox and motor are attached. If the motor
and gearbox are attached, it is recommended that they be removed prior to installing the chain.

Note: The pivoting piece of the Front Drive Unit is directional. Conveyor Chain must be fed into the
Drive Unit starting at the top side and pulled out on the bottom side. Failure to observe proper
direction when feeding the chain through the Drive Unit can result in damage to the equipment!

Note: Before attempting to install any Conveyor Chain through the Drive Unit, there must be enough
open conveyor attached to the unit to hold an entire roll of chain. Approximately 20 feet of open
conveyor, top and bottom, will be needed to hold a single roll of 10 meter chain.

Note: Be sure to wear all necessary Personal Protective Equipment prior to beginning any work.

Note: Be sure to observe all Lockout-Tagout procedures prior to performing any work on the system.

1. Using a Lubing Systems approved lubricant, brush on a light coating of lubricant on each side of
the chain down the entire length of the roll. Refer to the Spare Parts section of this manual
for Lubing Systems recommended lubricants.

Note: If the chain is installed prior to lubricating, it is recommended that the lubricant be
brushed onto the chain and the chain slideways.

4. Verify that all personnel are clear of the conveyor prior to starting the system.
5. Position observers along the length of the conveyor to watch the start-up of the system.

Note: It is especially important to observe the chain moving through the drive units and the
conveyor chain tensioning unit.

6. Jog the system forward approximately 12 inches, or (2) two seconds.

Note: For the initial movement of the conveyor system, it is recommended that the conveyor not be
run for more than (2) two seconds before making a first inspection.

7. Beginning at the main drive unit, walk the conveyor system, inspecting the conveyor chain for high
tension spots or slack build-up that resulted from the initial movement of the system.

Note: Problems with high tension or slack build-up will generally occur around a drive unit. Care
should be taken to carefully inspect the conveyor chain at each drive unit. Slack build-up can be
identified by looking for loose chain at the outfeed of the drive unit. High tension can be identified
by looking for chain that has pulled out of the chain slideways or more severely, broken chain.

Note: High tension spots and slack build-up are most commonly due to mis-wired or non-functioning
drive units. It is recommended that the chain be removed from the drive units at each end of the
section where the high tension spots occurred, and verify that the drive units are functioning
properly.

Note: In areas where high tension spots occurred, it is recommended that the conveyor chain
closing rods be inspected for stretch in the chain links and replaced as necessary. A common
indicator of a damaged closing rod is missing or loose security elements.

Note: It is important to make any necessary corrections before continuing with the system start-up.
It may be necessary to re-tension the chain if any corrections are made.

Note: Do not continue with the system start-up before ensuring that there is no slack build-up in the
conveyor chain. Failure to remove the slack in the system can result in damage to the conveyor
chain and the conveyor components.

Release 012510 4-15 1/2010

Start-up and Troubleshooting

Maintenance
Tips and Tricks

General
1. The Job Specific Drive Layout Sheet is custom engineered for each job based on information
provided prior to the build-up of the system. This Job Specific Drive Layout Sheet is provided
with each system and should be used as the blueprint for the conveyor system installation.
Prior to beginning the installation, all dimensions, measurements, and system components on
the Job Specific Drive Layout Sheet should be compared with actual job requirements. Any
discrepancies should be immediately reported back to the Lubing Systems Technical
Department or your local sales representative.
2. Using Variable Frequency Drives or Softstarters can greatly reduce the chances of component
related machine breakdowns, reduce the chances of product damage during conveyor start
stop sequences, and increase the life of the conveyor system.

Front Drive Unit

1. The Front Drive Unit position will define the location of all the other conveyor system
components. Taking extra care to properly elevate, level, and position the Front Drive Unit can
eliminate problems later with the installation of the other components.
2. The bristles of the cleaning brushes will act as a wick with the conveyor chain lubrication,
absorbing the lubrication along the edges of the chain. This build-up of lubrication in the bristles
can reduce the effectiveness of the cleaning brushes. Trimming the bristles back on the outside
edges, eliminating the contact of the bristles with the chain edges, can greatly increase the life
of the brushes.
3. Properly adjusting the elevation of the Front Drive Unit in relation to the downstream
equipment can greatly reduce the chances of damaged product when transferring from the
conveyor system to the downstream equipment.

Mini Drive Unit

1. The Mini Drive Unit position will define the location of all the other conveyor system
components. Taking extra care to properly elevate, level, and position the Mini Drive Unit can
eliminate problems later with the installation of the other components.
2. Properly adjusting the elevation of the Mini Drive Unit in relation to the downstream equipment
can greatly reduce the chances of damaged product when transferring from the conveyor
system to the downstream equipment.

Maintenance
Intermediate Drive Unit
1. For conveyor systems having an Intermediate Drive Unit(s), it is recommended that a spare
Intermediate Drive Unit be purchased as a drop-in replacement for installed units in the event of
a component failure. This can potentially save hours of unwanted down-time that would
otherwise require a rebuild of the installed unit. Repairs to the removed unit can then be made
after the conveyor has been placed back into operation.

Conveyor Chain
1. It is recommended that the number of Conveyor Chain Closing Rods used in the system be kept
to a minimum. Closing Rods are a point of inspection; keeping this number minimized can
reduce the number of potential inspection points in the system.
2. If a problem involving damage to the Conveyor Chain occurs, it is important that the condition of
the Conveyor Chain Closing Rods be inspected before running the system. A common indicator
of a damaged closing rod is missing or loose Security Elements.
3. Closing rod locations can be made more easily recognizable by using a closing rod different from
the style of chain in the conveyor system.

Example: When using a standard conveyor chain, purchase coated closing rods. The distinct
appearance of the coated rod will stand out against the standard chain making it easier to
identify the location of the closing rods in the conveyor system.

4. Conveyor chain is manufactured under very stringent standards for quality and durability.
Conveyor chain dimensions can however, vary within allowable tolerances depending upon the
date of manufacture of the chain. It is recommended that all conveyor chain, including spare
parts, be purchased at the same time.
