Instructions
Part 1:
Go to the library and physically borrow or check out an electronic book relevant to your research
project. Read the introduction, conclusion, and at least one chapter from the book. Using your Everyday
Writer, cite the book in MLA 8 in the space provided. Select three sections of text from your reading
that accurately, thoroughly, and ethically represent the argument of the source. Using these sections of
text, create several quotations and write a 250-word paragraph explaining the books argument. Make
sure to properly use and integrate your quotes into the 250-word paragraph.
Part 2:
Complete each category in the space provided.
Authority: How does the author assure the reader that the information presented is accurate and
complete? Click through links, look up citations, or verify important facts in the book through a
web search. Are the links, citations, or facts presented accurate and relevant? Look up other
sources written by the same author or biographical information about the author. What are their
credentials?
Bias: Explain the commitments of the author. What do they stand to gain from writing this
source? Who is their audience, and how can you tell? What kinds of organizations, ideas, or
beliefs do they associate themselves with? How do you know? Are multiple viewpoints
presented and addressed, or only the viewpoints of the author?
Context: Examine the website, journal, or other context in which the article is written. Is this
context credible? How does this context assure the reader that the content it publishes is accurate
and well-researched? What sort of sources does this context generally use (i.e., scholarly
journals, popular press, twitter, etc.)? How do these factors shape your view of this context?
Date: What is the date in which the book was published, and how much does this matter for
your subject? Explain your reasoning.

your ILP 1 and 2 in order to answer some questions.

Summary (250 words max. including quotations):
The introduction starts off with the author, Bonilla-Silva, Eduardo, talking about how his mother told
him to believe that he is equal to all no matter what others say. He didnt really believe of racism to be
something of existence but later in life he realized what his mother had meant. He is arguing that there
are small incidents of racism that still happen in our country yet we dont consider it racism, we just
believe that, that is the way that life works in the United States. He states this in the introduction when
talking about television/movie roles. He says, In this country, racial others of dark complexion are
always viewed as incapable of doing much (Bonilla-Silva, vii). He is arguing how there is a small
amount of minorities portrayed in movies as the lead. They are usually doing small jobs, that are looked
down upon such as bed making or waitressing. However, towards the end he states And, in truth, my
experience with good and generous people has outweighed the bad ones (Bonilla-Silva, vii). From this
statement he talks about all the professors and advisors as well as friends of many different races
including white had helped him and new looked down upon him. He is arguing how there is racism
happening in the country but not everyone wishes to be a racist, yet the country continues to hold it.
Everyone still has a certain way they feel when they see a person of each race, we all hold stigmas
relating back to how we perceive them and hold it against the race as a whole.
Response:
Ive gained the knowledge of that, many people do realize that racism is occurring but they are being
taught that if you are looked down upon dont let them. I just feel as if that is alieving the situation for a
while but not really getting to the root of the situation to fully eradicate it. My beliefs have changed the
sense that we live in a world where subtle racism is swept under the rug and not so much dealt out in the
open until there is a big outburst in racism.
3 How can you use this source in your project? Which parts of the source are most useful for
your project and why? How does this source relate to the sources you found in ILP 1 & 2?
Response:
The chapter itself is very useful for quotations or how racism is seen not only in day to day life but in
television and other sorts of media. This article is different as well where the author talks about his good
experiences as well, so he is indicating that not everyone feels of that way. This related to the articles
Ive previously found where there is racism in news and video games as well.
