BEACH MIDDLE SCHOOL BANDS

Katy Steklac, Director of Bands

Within 5 years of my appointment as the BMS Band Director, there will be:
Increased Performance Opportunities
5th Grade Beginning Band will perform at least threetimes a year with a performance in the
fall andin the spring and at the Mardi Gras Band Fundraiser. I would research additional
performance venues in the Chelsea community.
At least 75% of 7th and 8th Grade Band students will participate in MSBOA District 12 Solo
and Ensemble Festival.
At least 25% of 7th and 8th Grade Band students will audition for the MSBOA All State Band
ensemble.
The BMS 8th Grade Band will perform as a featured MSBOA ensemble at the Michigan Music
Conference.
BMS Bands students will have one additional significant performance a year, either at Cedar
Point as part of the "Music in the Parks Festival" or at the Michigan State Capitol Building in
Lansing as part of theirSpringConcert Series.
Increased Community Engagement
BMS Bands will perform as part of the Chelsea Hometown Holidays parade.
BMS Bands students will have more opportunities to attend field trip performances to
concerts by the University of Michigan School of Music and Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra!
More clinicians will be brought in to work with students in small group and full ensemble
settings.
The BMS Band Program will commission a full band piece by a local/regional composer.
Increased Use of Technology in the Classroom
Google Classroom will be used intensively in the classroom for classroom discussion,
submitting playing assessments, and collaboration among middle school musicians.
A website as well as Twitter/Facebook pages will be established for the BMS Band program
for increased communication and increased positive exposure in the Chelsea community.

Increased Retention
There will be increased retention of students as they move through the Chelsea Band
Program with a focus on the transition between BMS and CHS. This will be accomplished by
establishing a stronger mentor program between high school and middle school musicians
and creating additional avenues for BMS band students to experience opportunities available
to them at the high school.
