Henry Ford

Henry Ford was born in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1863.

He died in 1947.

Ford recognised the importance of the assembly line and the conveyor belt in the speed
of manufacturing.

His River Rouge plant in Detriot, Michigan, became the largest factory complex in the
world.

Ford decided to concentrate on producing a single, standard model, the Model T Ford,
which was only available in one colour: black.

By 1925 Ford was producing a car every ten seconds.

A new Model T cost only $290.

More than 15 million were produced between 1908 and 1925.

In 1927 they came off the production line at a rate of one every ten seconds.

1920: 9 million cars were registered in the USA.

1292: more than 26 million cars were registered in the USA.

One in five Americans owned a car by the end of the 1920s.

Americas annual output of cars was around 5 million a year by the end of the 1920s.

Almost 500,000 workers were employed in the automobile industry.

The automobile industry stimulated growth in the production of such key materials as
steel, rubber, leather, nickel and paint.

The petroleum industry depended on the automobile industry for its growth.

During the 1920s, around $1 billion a year was spent on the construction of a national
network of highways.
