Lab 03: Meshing for Stirring Tank

Session 3 / 2016-2

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 1

Objectives

Generate an appropiate mesh for the previously modeled stirring tank.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 2

I. Setup: Start

1. Insert a new Mesh module and

couple it to the Geometry module.
2. Open Mesh.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 3

I. Setup: Set the view
1. Make sure the metric system units
are set (Units menu).
2. Adjust the view:
View -> Shaded Exterior with
Edges
Select both solids and set
Transparency to 0.5 in the
Graphics Properties.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 4

I. Setup: Configure Mesh

1. Select the Mesh.

2. In the Defaults section set Physics
Preference to CFD and Solver
Preference to Fluent.
3. In the Sizing section set Size
Function to Curvature and
Relevance Center to Fine.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 5

II. Preparation: Modifying Geometry

1. Open Desing Modeler.

*Do not close the Meshing Application.

We will slice the geometry at

certain points so as to mesh each
region propperly.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 6

II. Preparation: Slicing
1. Create -> Slice
Set Slice Type to Slice by Surface.
Set the outer face between the impeller body and
the outer body as Target Face.
Set Slice Targets to All Bodies.
2. Generate (result below).

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 7

II. Preparation: Slicing
1. Create -> Slice
Set Slice Type to Slice by Plane.
Select XY Plane as Base Plane.
Set Slice to the shown two bodies.
2. Generate (result below).

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 8

II. Preparation: Group Bodies

1. Select the 5 bodies shown.

2. Right Click -> Form New Part This will ensure the partitions are
*Two bodies should be shown not assumed independent from
one another.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 9

II. Preparation: Group Bodies
1. Close Design Modeler.
2. Return to the Mesh application and
update the geometry.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 10

III. Meshing: Edge Sizing
1. Select the four edges as shown.
2. Right Click the Mesh -> Sizing
Set the Type to Number of
Divisions.
Set Number of Divisions to 40.
Set Behavior to Hard.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 11

III. Meshing: Biased Edge Sizing

1. Select the shown body and Hide All

Other Bodies.
2. Insert an Edge Sizing for the shown
4 edges.
3. Set the Details view as shown.
4. Use the Reverse Bias for the right
side edges, in order to guide the
element towards the center.
Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 12
III. Meshing: Named Selections

1. Show all the bodies, hide all of

them except the single solid as
shown.
2. Use the Box Select Mode to select
all the impeller faces as shown.
3. Right Click -> Create Named
Selections

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 13

III. Meshing: Named Selections

1. Return to Single Select mode.

2. Select the three faces surrounding
the impeller.
3. Create a named selection as
shown.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 14

III. Meshing: Named Selections
1. Show all bodies.
2. Select the two faces that
form the shaft and create a
named selection.
3. Create another named
selection for the outer
surface (tank). It is useful to
select any of the faces and
then use Extend to Limits.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 15

III. Meshing: Named Selections

1. Hide the Impellers body.

2. Hide the necessary faces to
select the 5 ones that form the
interface between the impeller
and the tank.
3. Create a named selection.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 16

III. Meshing: Named Selections
1. Create the following named
selections for the outer and
inner domains.

Prof. Alex Arnaldo Pachas Napa 17

III. Meshing: Automatic Inflation
1. Show all bodies and select
Mesh.
2. In the Inflation section set Use
Automatic Inflation to All Faces
in Chosen Named Selection.
3. Select impeller as Named
Selection.
4. Generate the mesh.
