In James Stewart’s Calculus: Concepts andR x Contexts, 4th Edition, Section 5.2, Exercise 48, we
are asked to consider the function F (x) = 2 f (t)dt, for which we are given the graph for f . We
are then asked whether F is larger at F (0), F (1), F (2), F (3), or F (4).
Rx
This is pretty straight forward. The fact that F (x) = 2 f (t)dt tells us that F (x) isn’t defined
until f (2), so we need not consider F (0) or F (1). We next notice that f is negative over (2, 5), thus
F is decreasing over (2, 5). So F must be largest at F (2). That’s all there is to it.
