Its good to have money and the things that money can buy, but its good, too,
to check up once in a while and make sure that you havent lost the things that
money cant buy. George Lorimer
3. There is a gigantic difference between earning a great deal of money and being
rich. Marlene Dietrich
Assefa Chabo, a former member of parliament, writer and lawyer passed away in Dallas, Texas,
on Sunday at the age of 73.
Born in Gamugofa, southern Ethiopia, Chabo entered politics and public service at a very young
age. A graduate of the Addis Ababa University Law Faculty, Chabo was, among other Ethiopian
lawyers, a recipient of an international award given to students of law. He was also awarded with
a gold watch by Emperor Haileselassie for his academic achievements.
Chabo was imprisoned by the former Ethiopian government for over 10 years due to his
activism; and upon his release, became a member of the transitional government after the
EPRDF assumed power in Addis Ababa in 1991.
Chabo wrote extensively on Ethiopian politics and his book Yetizita Feleg, a compilation of
his articles, has garnered huge acclaim. He was working on his autobiography at the time of his
death, it was lerarnt.
Assefa Chabos body will be sent to Ethiopia for burial, according to his friends, who have
launched a gofundme account to help raise money to cover funeral costs.
Dr. Merera Gudina, chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress, who is detained on cooked up
charges of terrorism presented his defence on Monday.
In an 11 page argument against the charges by the regime, Dr. Merera said his trip to Belgium
and the subsequent speeches he gave at the European Parliament should not be reasons to his
arrest and detention by the regime. He said his trip has nothing to do with trespassing the state of
emergency, which is one of the charges brought by regime prosecutors.
Regime authorities use the martial law as an excuse to arrest and intimidate dissents.
Dr. Merera denied charges that he gave interviews to Ethiopian independent media abroad which
regime prosecutors say have sparked the uprising in the Oromo region last year.
Regime prosecutors accused that Merera and co defendants have acted to overthrow the
constitutionally formed government.
Rights groups say charges against Merera and co were politically motivated.
