P.D.James.ADetectiveisaninvestigator.Somemaybeprivateresearchersandmaybe
knownasTheEyethatneversleeps,whichisthemottoofthePinkertondetective
agency,alsoknownasPrivateEyes.Adetectiveisalicensedindividualwhosolves
crimesincludingpastcrimesbyexaminingandevaluatingcluesandpersonalrecordsto
uncovertheidentityofthecriminal.Apolicedetectiveimpactsthecommunityby
servingandprotecting,solvingcrimes,andhelpingintimesofcrisistomakethe
worldanexceptionalplacetolivein.
Firstandforemost,thenumberoneimpactthatpoliceshouldmakeistoserve

naturaldisasterchangedthelivesofmanytowhichthepolicedepartmentwerelefttotake
careandhelpouttheonesinneed.Theymustbeequippedwithwaymorethanjustagun
andabadge,Policedetectivesmusthavekitsoffoodandwaterandfirstaidsjustincase
theyneedtousethemduringdisastersforthepeople.Researchhasshownthatsuccessful
disastermanagementresultsprimarilyfromtheactivitiesofemergencyorganizations.In
particular,therearemanagementproblemswithrespecttothecommunicationprocess,the
exerciseofauthority,andthedevelopmentofcoordination.(Quarantelli)Thepoliceare
justasvulnerableasthepeoplewhenanaturaldisasterstrikesandalthoughtheyare
helpinginacrisis,theyhavetosuccumbwhattheyfeel.Thecommunityiswhatneedsthe
help.
Ultimately,policedetectiveshavemoregoingonthenjustpatrollingthe
neighborhood,theyhavetoprotectthemselvesfromthecommunityaswell,assomeofthe

detectivesdoesistoprotectthecommunityandimpacttheminawayforthemtoseethat
alltheyretryingtodoismaketheworldabetterplacebyservingandprotecting,helping
withnaturaldisastersandinvestigatingcrimes.Thepolicedetectivewhoputstheirlifeon
thelinewithnosuperpowers,noXrayvision,nosuperstrength,noabilitytofly,and
aboveallnoinvulnerabilitytobullets,revealsfargreatervirtuethanSupermanwhois
