Learning Objective: In order to complete the temple run, students will be
able to demonstrate their knowledge on map usage, finding the area and
volume of a pyramid, decoding a message, figuring out how to use locks,
and using a sun dial to tell time, given that the teachers provide them
with all instructions and items needed.
Standards: 6.1.1 Summarize the rise, decline, and cultural achievements of
ancient civilizations in Europe and Mesoamerica. (Indiana)
Character List:
Engineer
Archeologist
Tour Guide
Professor
The students will enter in the total sum in a combination lock, which will be
attached to a box. Once the students have unlocked the box, inside is the clue for
the next task.
Resource: Picture of pyramid
IEP students: Have volume formula written on their paper
Standard:6.GM.5: Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge
lengths using unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths (e.g., using
technology or concrete materials), and show that the volume is the same as would
be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas V = lwh
and V = Bh to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths
to solve real-world and other mathematical problems.
Task #2 (Archeologist)
The clue reads:
"Now you're free or so you think, check the dial or you'll sink!
It tells time but can you? Find the direction you must choose.
The archeologist takes the lead, the others are there to help succeed.
Find the tool that determines degrees.
After noon but less than five, gets you out of here alive."
Answer: The key to knowledge is inside a book, take a moment to stop and look!
The students must then go to the library, where four books will be pulled out on the
first shelf. The students must then look inside each book, and find the one with the
key hidden inside. The correct book will be titled: "Guatemala"
Inside the book there will also be a note that reads:
"Take the key back to the classroom and find the lock on the correct cabinet. Inside
will be your final task."
Professor and Tour Guide Take The Lead.
Let's See If Your Brilliance Will Help You Succeed
Resource: above
Visual impaired: Large print printed on their sheet
Once the students arrive back in the classroom and find the cabinet, they will
use the key to unlock the lock, and inside will be a set up Jenga game. There will be
6 pieces colored with different colors (ROYGBV). These pieces have the numbers
representing the date the Mayan calendar said the world was going to end.
(12.21.12) The students will need to pull the colored pieces out without knocking
down the tower. Once all the pieces are removed, they will place them in the correct
order of the colors of the rainbow, and this will show the correct date. There will also
be a clue taped to the inside of the door to help the students figure out what the
numbers stand for.
The clue reads:
Clue: "After rain, before the sun, what occurs when they are one?
The engineer must get it right, unless you don't want to go home tonight!"
Resource: Jenga game
IEP kids: n/a for this task
Standard: 6.NS.2: Understand the integer number system. Recognize
opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the
number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number
itself (e.g., (3) = 3), and that 0 is its own opposite.
The students will present the answer to the teacher. The teacher will hand over an
office pass. The students will go to the office where the secretary will give the
students their golden chocolate coins and a "Todos lo hicieron!" note. The note will
also state at the bottom: "I hope you had fun completing the temple run. You used
math to find the area and volume of a pyramid, you used your skills to read a sun
dial and tell time. You were put to the test with using your computer science skills to
decode a message, but you figured it out none the less. You had practice using locks
and maps, and even took a trip to the library. Oh the things you learned from
completing this super fun temple run!"

Work together but also apart, because we know each one of you is smart.
Find the sum, get the lock, or else you won't beat the clock!"
