ASSURE Model Instructional Plan

Lesson Title: Letter Recognition Alphabet fishing

Teachers Name: Rebecca Cosgrove
Grade: Preschool; 4 year olds
Content Area: Literacy
Lesson Length: One hour

Analyze Learners

1. 20 students
2. 12 male 8 female
3. 18 4 year olds, 2 5 year olds
4. Mental, Social, Physical, Social Notes such as:
o Learning Differences
o 11 Children with English as second language
5. Current Knowledge, Prerequisites, and Notes about Learner
Attitudes
50% of students can identify most capital letters. 30% can identify most capital and
lowercase letters. Students have shown interest in fishing, pretending to fish
outdoors at recess.
6. Learning Styles
(Estimate % of Students)
o 30% of my students are visual learners
o 20% of my students are auditory learners
o 50% of my students are kinesthetic learners
State Objectives
Kindergarten students will be able to identify upper and lower case letters by name at 70%:
as well as be able to use the pipe cleaner fishing rod to pick up magnetic letters from a
bucket.

Select Methods, Media, , and Materials

All methods, media, and materials needed for the lesson are listed..
1. Presentation and Demonstration with individual practice because over 50% of my
students are visual and kinesthetic learners
2. Media alphabet dancing song by Dr. Jean to better reach my auditory and kinesthetic
learners.
3. Materials- Computer with internet access, magnetic letters, large bin with filler, pipe
cleaners, paper clips (for hooks), alphabet board, matching letter sheet to support all
students.
Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods

For each listed above, details of how they will be implemented into the lesson to enhance
learning with using 5Ps.
1. Preview the materials: Preview songs on Youtube, preview alphabet board and matching
sheet
2. Prepare the materials: Prepare fishing rods (pipe cleaners with paperclips) and water
bucket with fish (bucket filled with blue filler paper and magnetic alphabet letters)
3. Prepare the environment: Song and dancing and instruction will take place during circle
time, individual practice will take place during free choice centers
4. Prepare the learners: During circle time I will give a broad overview of expectations,
participate in singing and dancing and demonstrate fishing
5. Provide the learning experiences: Outlined in the Require Learner Participation
section.
Require Learner Participation
Starting at circle time I will explain to learners that we have a new alphabet activity.
To get started we will sing our ABCs
Then I will identify letters both capital and lowercase on our alphabet board, out of order,
allowing students to say the letters along with me.
Then we will stand up and stretch
I will play Dr. Jeans Alphabet song on YouTube and project the video onto the whiteboard.
I will participate with students by moving to the letter name, sound and a word starting with
that letter (following Dr. Jeans video instruction)
After singing and dancing we will return to our seats on the carpet
I will bring out the materials for the letter fishing game (see materials above).
Then I will name each of the materials and explain its purpose to students: this bucket is
filled with magnetic letters pretend water, like a pond. This pipe cleaners has a paperclip
attached to it, like a fishing pole and this is alphabet matching sheet with all of the letters on
it.
I will then demonstrate to the learners how to use the fishing pole to fish for letters on their
matching sheets; practicing 2 or 3 times.
I will then ask if everyone understands and/or if they have any questions.
If there are any questions, I will further explain. If not, we will dismiss circle time and the
fishing game will be given to one student at a time.

Evaluate & Revise

Evaluation methods for each of the following are included:
1. Student Performance:
I will be using a simple checklist, while observing students on weather they can
correctly match letters as well as their physical abilities to use the fishing pole
correctly.
2. Media Effectiveness
I would evaluate myself on how the YouTube video, the dance and the fishing pole
work, how the students do, how engaged they were during the video and during the
individual fishing.
3. Instructor Performance
I will have another teacher coming in to grade me on how my instructor performance

was. I will also be looking at the success rate of students. If my students have a 70%
success rate or higher I will know I was effective in teaching them to recognize upper
and lower case letters.
