ME-322: Machine Design, Lab class 5

Course instructor: S K Dwivedy

I. Create the base(c1) and pitch circle(c2) of the gear.
II. From the centre draw a vertical line(L1), draw another line(L2) from the centre of the circle
at an angle(anticlockwise) with value , z= Number of teeth.
III. Draw line(L3) from the centre at an angle, (pressure angle) clockwise.
IV. Taking point 1 as a centre(intersection between base circle(c1) and line(L3)) draw a circle(c3)
with radius equal to the distance between point 1 and point 2(Intersection between
circle(c2) and line(L2)).
V. Draw dedendum circle(c4) and addendum circle(c5).
VI. Using the trim command from the modify menu, obtain the involute profile between point
3(Intersection between c1 and c3) and point 4(Intersection between c1 and c5) from circle
(c3).

VII. Repeat the construction procedure from point(II) to point(VI) to obtain a mirror image of the
original tooth profile.( Hint: Reverse the direction of angles to draw the lines separated by
pressure angle.
VIII. Join the tip of the tooth profile by a horizontal line and fix the base circle using the fixed
constraint.
IX. Incorporate fillet radius at the bottom of the teeth on both the sides with appropriate fillet
radius. Draw circle(c6) with the dimension of the shaft.
X. Delete all the objects leaving only the base circle and tooth profile.
XI. Extrude the sketch and apply circular pattern to develop the 3-D model of the gear.
XII. Generate the mating gear on the same geometry modeller as per the problem.
