This specification does not include coatings with thermal and electrical properties. It purely defines about anti corrosive coating systems for various exposure conditions. The equipment bought in the fully finished condition and protected by their manufacturer according to an approved standard are not covered by this Standard Specification. These standardized items, such as motors, pumps, exchangers, compressors, filters, valves, transducers etc, have the manufacturer's standard protection and finish color. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS. PREPARATION OF THE SURFACES TO BE PAINTED The protection and resistance quality of a painting system mainly depends on the care taken when preparing the steel surface. This preparation has two purposes: > To remove all existing contaminant elements so as to ensure the adhesion of the rust inhibitive primer (no oxides, weld beads, oil or grease, dust and dirt, moistness); > To obtain a surface preparation -degree of cleaning and roughness- suitable for proper adhesion of the paint DEGREASING The purpose of the degreasing operations is to remove the heavy stains prior to cleaning the surfaces to white metal by means of a mechanical procedure (abrasive blasting). The products to be used are the following > Pure solvents containing aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, > Emulsifiable solvents containing aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons associated with surface- active agents, > Detergents and lies consisting of mineral compounds, surface-active agents and possibly rust-inhibitors. These products must be free from soda, potash and carbonate. The already painted surface shall be cleaned with water, Xylene or light white spirit after papering and before applying the next coat. Any other solvent is prohibited without the approval. MECHANICAL SURFACE PREPARATION The required surface preparation, i.e. roughness is generally obtained by abrasive blasting with corundum, shots and/or grit. The wire brushing, grinding or pickling procedures must only be used to remove local traces of oxides according to special instructions-where blasting is not possible. The below mentioned environmental conditions must be fulfilled at all the time of application - “Blasting and Painting operations must be carried out only if the surface temperature is above +5 °C and the humidity less than 85%. It must be ensured that the surface is free from moisture or condensation (surface temperature must be +3 °C higher than the environmental dew point). Metal surface temperature must be less than 50°C”. Power systems ALSTOM 243 22 Depending on steel grade, the following abrasives must be used + For ferritic steels 1 ‘Angular hematite pig iron grit 2, Angular steel grit 3. Mineral grit (corundum, slag) > — Forstainless steels: 1) Corundum The nature, quality, granularity and application parameters for the abrasives are determined to ‘obtain the cleaning degree Sa 2% to 3 as per requirement defined under ISO 8501-1 Standard Specification. The obtained roughness must range from 45-75 y. The so-cleaned surfaces must keep a temperature +3 °C higher than dew point. The first coat must be applied within a maximum time interval depending on the hygrometry rate, as mentioned in the table below. However sweep blast the surface if this time exceeds 12 hours ‘or depends on visual appearance of metal before priming. Relative Humidi Time ‘85% or above Do not blast | 80-84% 2Hours 70-78% 4 Hours | 60-69% @ Hours | COMMENT All weld joints will be blasted and primed in shop and not to be final painted. At site, after welding, only welded/ burned area needs to be prepared for painting, rest of primed area can be directly painted PREPARATION OF PAINT MATERIAL AND SHELF LIMIT OF PAINT Addition of diluting agents and mixing of two components in multi-component systems shall be done just before application according to directions of paint manufacturer. Stir well both the components with pneumatic stirrer to ensure that there is no settling at bottom of container, After mixing, sufficient stirring is required to get homogeneous multi component mixture with suitable thinner, Storage condition will be done as per the requirement of the paint supplier > The sheff life limit is shown in clear on the package , It is absolutely forbidden to use a paint when the shelf life limit is over(wherever it may be indicated as best before or Use by) POWER SYSTEMS : ALSTOM 2.3. 2.4, 25 2.5.1 2.6.2 2.6. 2.6.1 PAINTING PROCEDURES Paint shall only be applied when above mentioned atmospheric conditions are completely fulfiled. Paints are normally applied by means of a high-pressure “Airless” gun; the use of a pneumatic gun and / or Air assisted gun is admitted, when ever required. Paint applications using a brush or a roller are allowed mainly on areas where access is uneasy or to carry out repairs PRIMING The primer gives first protection against corrosion, In addition, adhesion between substrate, intermediate and finish paint. Primers have only a limited weather resistance. The specified dry film thickness shall be applied to all required surface. After priming the equipment or parts shall be stored in open air only for limited time until the finish coat is applied. Before application of subsequent coats it must be cleaned by means of papering, washing and / or solvent wiping. THICKNESS AND TOLERANCE OVER THICKNESS: SPECIFICATION OF A MINIMUM THICKNESS (L) The specified thickness corresponds to minimum values of the painting system. TOLERANCE OVER MINIMUM THICKNESS (L) Local measurements less than the minimum thickness L can be admitted if the two following requirements are complied with > The average of all measurements made on the reference area is equal or more than the minimum required value. > No measurement point is below 90% of the minimum required value (or 0.9 L). INSPECTION INSPECTION METHOD Thickness measurement is required to be carried out at every stage by applicator to ensure perfect thickness of each coat in the system. For record of inspection, Alstom has a standard format, attached as annexure doc. For checking on porosity, variable voltage test instrument with built-in pore will be used for water contact systems when ever required. The test voltage should not exceed 2000 V or Dielectric strength of coating. The tests will not be performed within 0.5 m distance from uncovered surfaces and less than 10M2 continues surface. power systems ALSTOM 2.6.2 DEFINITION OF THE NUMBER OF MEASUREMENT POINTS Extent of surface to be inspected Recommended number of (reference area in m? or ml for piping and measurement frameworks) | _ <10 | 10 to 20 10 to 100 20 to 50 100 to 1000 50 to 100 1000 to 10000_ za 100 to 200 _ 3.
