Georgia Southern University Hosts Annual No Impact Week

Georgia Southern University hosted a sustainability week called No Impact Week from

April 9-16, 2017 on campus. No Impact Week is a one week carbon cleanse. The event was

planned to teach students the difference no impact living can have on their quality of life. Each

day of the week had a theme with activities centered around the theme. The themes starting in

order from Sunday to Sunday included: consumption, trash, energy, water, food, transportation,

giving back, and reflection.

The first 600 students to sign up for No Impact Week (NIW) were eligible to receive a NIW t-

shirt made from plastic bottles and receive email updates on the many NIW events taking place

on campus. Students could participate in theme based exhibits, activities, and showcases

throughout the week once they were signed up. Popular themes of the week included energy,

water, and transportation.

On April 11,2017, the theme was energy students rode a stationary bike connected to a blender to

make themselves a nutritious healthy smoothie which consisted of raspberries, kale, orange juice,

and whipped cream.

It took a while to make the smoothie, but it was worth it, said Tshai Anderson.
On April 12, 2017, the theme was water students could make their own terrarium. The terrarium

consisted of rocks, soil, moss, water, and a terrarium friendly plant. The terrariums only must be

watered every three weeks.

A terrarium is a neat way to have a plant while dealing with the demands of being a student or
working., said Courtney Johnson.

On April 15, 2017 students were encouraged to bike to campus for prizes and there was a

community bike ride later. The bike to campus was a way to prevent some pollution that would

normally occur from driving to school.

No Impact Week was sponsored by Georgia Southern Universitys University Wellness Program

and Center for Sustainability. Most of the volunteer consisted of students, professors, and faculty

that are connected to the groups. Many greek life volunteers also lended a hand during No

Impact Week. Georgia Southern University has the longest running No Impact Week in the

country.
