increased students understanding of the concept.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards: 3.OA.2 Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers.

Lesson Objectives: Given math manipulatives, the students will demonstrate knowledge of basic division of 1 digit
numbers with 100% accuracy.

Materials Needed:
-Marbles
-Large laminated number cards, with division and equal sign
-Pennies
-Colored Cubes
-Pencil
-Paper

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: Each student at Rustic Acres is an ESL student. There are 9 students in
grades 3-8. There are 7 boys and 2 girls. There are no students on formal IEPS. However, there is one student who

A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (5 minutes)
getting attention The Great Divider is back today! But you are him!
relating to past experience and/or knowledge Yesterday, you used the Great Dividers sword to
separate things into equal groups.
creating a need to know Today, you will use marbles, pennies and cubes instead of a sword.
sharing objective, in general terms Given all of these objects and number cards, you will
demonstrate for me that you separate things into 1-digit groups.

2. Content Delivery (25 minutes)

a. Modeling Teacher will take division sign and equal sign and set them about 6 inches apart. The
teacher will then take the number 6 and the number 2 and set them on either side of the division sign.
I want to separate 6 into equal groups of 2. How many groups will I end up with? Teacher will take 6
cubes and separate into two equal groups. Look how I end up with 3 equal groups of 2. I know that 3
times 2 is 6. 6 divided by 2 is 3. You try.
b. Student Practice Students will practice by selves with guided help from teacher. Teacher will pre-set
problems that children choose from. Students will record division problems on paper after completing
them with the manipulatives.
3. Closure (3 mins)
a. You are all officially Great Dividers! Soon, you will be working with two-digit numbers. Thank you for
practicing with me today.
B. Assessments Used
i. Recorded division problems from manipulative practice

C. Differentiated Instruction
i. Experienced with inexperienced If a student is having difficulty using the manipulatives, an older
student, when finished with their own math, will practice with the 3rd grade student.

D. Resources
i. None.

Reflection: The students enjoyed being the great divider themselves today! I believe that the manipulatives greatly
enhanced their comprehension of the process of division. Seeing it happening helped to make it happen in side their
heads.
