The ART of Learning

By Michelle Bly
Art can be incorporated into learning in many ways. It is a phenomenon that shapes
perception, embodies emotion, communicates attitudes and expands the boundaries of human
experience. Governors State University showcases a variety of emerging artists and exhibits that
can help expand knowledge and artistic abilities.
GSU offers a wide range of courses that enable you to become a developing artist with a variety
of diverse skills. Studio courses include painting, drawing, design, ceramics, printmaking,
photography, digital imaging and sculpture. Classes in art history treat art objects as historical
documents related in subject, style, technique and material to other works of art and interpret
their context and purpose. Faculty members, also artists themselves, provide individualized
instruction and academic advising.
In addition to the courses offered, Governors State
University also offers Nathan Manilows Sculpture
Park; a large-scale contemporary area that offers
programs and events that present the landscape and
sculpture in innovative ways that are both educational
and inspiring. The park is supported by volunteers and
donors who believe in its mission and its principal
goals of education, acquisition and conservation.
Governors State Universitys Nathan Manilow
Sculpture Park is open dawn until dusk, 365 days a
year. Parking and admission to the park are free. Contact: 708.534.4486 or

There is an extensive amount of artwork around campus provided by students of GSU. The Art
on Campus program is activating wall spaces on campus with student, alumni and community
artwork. Because these galleries are located in public areas at GSU, the exhibits can be viewed
any time the campus is open. This artwork can inspire students to expand their minds, and
creativity within their education at GSU.
GSU student, JuJuan Day who holds the title of Mr. Governors State University states "I
believe the art around Governors State University (GSU) is remarkable and interesting at the
same time. Whenever I walk around GSU by myself, it amazes me that we have so many
students and sculptors who have creative minds and are willing to share how they feel to the
public."
Schedule a visit today at GSU to view the inspirational artwork on campus and speak to an
advisor about the art programs offered for Summer 2017. There is an artist in all of us!
