Hair
Cuticle- the scale structure covering the exterior of the hair
Cortex- the main body of the hair shaft (color)
Medulla- a cellular column running through the center of the hair
1. Three types of human medullas
a. Continuous

Anagen phase- the initial growth phase during which the hair follicle is actively
producing hair, can last anywhere from 4-6 years
Catagen phase- a transition stage between the anagen and telogen phases of hair
growth, growth is stationary
Telogen phase- the final growth phase in which hair naturally falls out of the skin (root)

Hair is CLASS evidence

- Can often determine the body area of origin
- Can often determine racial origin
o Negroid- kinky with dense, uneven pigment. Flat to oval in shape
o Caucasian- Straight or wavy, fairly evenly distributed pigment. Oval to round
shape

When you forcibly remove a hair from someones head you will see the follicle tissue
attached

Human Hair Animal Hair

Medullary index is usually less than .33 Medullary index is generally greater than
mm or equal to .5 mm

Natural fibers may be obtained from plant, Synthetic fabrics are textiles made from
animal, and mineral sources. man-made rather than natural fibers

Those from plant sources include cotton, Examples of synthetic fabrics

flax, hemp, sisal, jute, kenaf, and coconut.
Fibers from animal sources
include silk (worms), wool (sheep),
and mohair (goat)
include polyester,
acrylic, nylon, rayon, acetate, spandex,
latex, orlon and Kevlar.
Made by joining monomers into polymers,
through a process called polymerization.
