Direct Instruction Lesson Plan
I. Describe the Class

5th grade Social Studies. Class of 25 students. 2 ESL students.

II. Subject/Skill:

Social Studies, Maps and Locations.


Label a map of the United States, regions, states and capitals.

III. Objective(s)

Students will be able to name and identify location of all 50 U.S. states along with the
regions they belong to and their state capitals.

IV. Procedures
Introduce states by western and eastern regions of the US.
Hand out map of US and have students identify and label regions of the US as we learn
them.
Students will then work in groups and be assigned different regions, where students are to
work together to identify state capitals and major cities.
Bring class together and have groups present state capitals.
Introduce state song to name states and point out their location, beginning with the
middle of the country and working outwards according to their region (from North
Dakota down and over to California for western region, then Minnesota to Maryland for
eastern region and include Hawaii and Alaska).
For homework, students will be given a blank US map where they are to identify the
regions, 50 states, and their capitals.

V. Materials

Map of 50 US states.
Map of US regions
Social studies textbook with state information including name, location and capital.
VI. Grouping Structures

Students will divide into groups of 5 and Students will be assigned different regions,
where students are to work together to identify states and capitals.

VII. Modifications
ESL students will be given a list of how to pronounce states and their capitals as well
as a map of the regions outlined for them to identify.

VIII. Assessment
Having students sing the state song on their own. Followed by a quiz where they are
to identify regions and capitals.
