24 Hours Volume (PCU) Assignment

USER-EQUILIBRIUM ASSIGNMENT TECHNIQUE:


Based on Wardrops principle that states no driver can unilaterally reduce
his/her travel cost by shifting to another route.
It is assumed that user has perfect knowledge of path cost; Travel Time on
given link is a function of that link only; Travel time is positive and increasing.
The path connecting O-D pairs are divided into two categories:
A) Those carrying the flow;
B) Those not carrying the flow on which the travel time is greater than
minimum or equal to O-D travel time. If the flow pattern is followed in this
way, no user will change the route. All other paths will have equal or heavy
travel time.
Hence User Equilibrium criteria will match every OD pair.
However this method is complex as the link travel time functions increase
monotonously. On the other hand link travel time is independent of flow and
other links of network.

INCREMENTAL INCREASE ASSIGNMENT TECHNIQUE:
In this method the fraction of traffic volumes are assigned are assigned in
steps.
In each step, fixed proportion of total demand is assigned based on all or
nothing assignment.
After each step the link travel times are recalculated based on link volume.
When there are many increments used, flow may resemble an equilibrium
assignment, however the method do not yield equilibrium solution.
Consequently there will be inconsistency between link volume and travel
time that travel time that leads to error in evaluation measures.
The incremental assignment is influenced by the order in which volume for
which the O-D pair are assigned, raising the possibility additional bias in result.

STOCHASTIC EQUILIBRIUM ASSIGNMENT TECHNIQUE:
In this assignment only the models which explicitly allow non minimum cost
routes are selected.
It is assumed that drivers perception of cost on an identical route are not
identical and the trips between each O-D pair are divided amongst the route
with cheapest route attracting most trips.
They have an advantage over other models because they load many route
between individual pair of network nodes in a single pass.
This assignment is more stable and less sensitive to the slight variation in
network definition or link cost to be independent of flow.
Hence this assignment is more appropriate for use in uncongested traffic
conditions such as off peak periods and lightly trafficked rural areas.
