Philosophy of Literacy

I believe

A balanced literacy program is essential for developing a

students proficiency in literacy.

The essential components of a balanced literacy program

include; reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading,
independent reading, writing aloud, shared writing, guided
writing, independent writing, and word study.

A balanced literacy program provides substantial instruction to

support the various learning styles that all children possess.

In order to understand how well students can apply knowledge

and skills in literacy teachers should monitor the milestone
behaviors of each student. Milestone behaviors incorporate
literacy attitudes, oral language, comprehension, writing, and
oral reading.

Students need enabling skills such as phonemic awareness,

letter/sound correspondence, and concepts of print to
successfully complete the types of real reading and writing
experiences that are included in milestone behaviors.

Students need to be exposed to a plethora of print rich

experiences.

Literacy experiences should provide students with meaningful

experiences using language arts in real world situations.

Creative writing allows students to explore the possibilities of

writing and learn to write for enjoyment.

Students should be encouraged to read and develop a love for

reading.
