Assessment tools: Students will create a Venn diagram that will describe the
similarities and differences between a plant and a human.
Assessment Criteria: Students will list three similarities and differences between a
human and a plant. It is expected that 75% of the students will get a 75% or higher
Objective(s):
Students will be able to describe the similarities and differences of the structure of a plant
and human and how it supports their survival.

Academic Standards:
3.LS.3 Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures
that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction

Background Knowledge/Prerequisite Skills:


Students have prior knowledge of using Venn diagrams.

Materials:

Venn diagram
Pencils

Anticipatory Set:
Have students observe a flower , and discuss what they are seeing with another student

Procedures (model; instruct; samples; guided & independent practice; monitor progress,
etc.):
Explain to the students that they will be learning about the five parts of plant.
Use a video for learning the parts of a plant https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Ask questions about the parts of the plant that are named in the video.
Create a Venn diagram that compare and contrast the parts of a plant and human.
Model an example of a difference and a similarity. (Plants have roots humans have
feet Both need water to survive)
Students will assist the teacher in describing additional differences and similarities
Students will independently create their own Venn diagram listing three differences
and similarities, different from the board
Closure (restate objective & connect across curriculum/real life application):
Have the students partner up and share their diagrams
ask: Why is it important to know the parts of the plant and a human
Ask: How can we use this knowledge at home.
