Signature Assignment

A case study that I thoroughly enjoyed this semester was CH 10 Assignment:

A Self Heating Can in Chapter 10 Energy. The purpose of this assignment was

to use your knowledge of enthalpy to design a self-heating can and then to

create a design that could be used in a commercial setting. The purpose is

to analyze heat transfer and carry out guided calculations to reach

fundamental conclusions. This assignment will use quantitative skills to

analyze a problem and to draw conclusions about this project.

If we were asked to evaluate the feasibility of a self-heating can for

commercial use the can will engage in a chemical reaction to heat up the

liquid for human consumption. The reaction will occur in an enclosed

chamber within the container. The reaction will involve calcium oxide and

water to give calcium hydroxide. The formula for this reaction is CaO (s) +

H2O Ca(OH)2 (aq) Which gives an enthalpy of H = -63.7 kj/mol.

The specifications for the self-heating can are as follows:

- Heat 8 fluid ounces of liquid water from room temperature, (25C) to

62.8C.

-Contain the reactants in packaging that is consistent with the consumers

expectations

The reaction between calcium oxide and water is used because it is an

exothermic reaction. In order to determine the energy produced by this

reaction you need to know the enthalpy charge. The beverage is heated by

this reaction that takes placed in an enclosed reaction chamber. The heating

of the beverage is an endothermic process. The heat is absorbed by the

beverage is equal to the heat generated by this reaction. To determine the

amount of energy that must be absorbed by the beverage one needs to

know the heat capacity. In order to determine the mass of the beverage its

appropriate to use an estimate of the density of the liquid.

1st step is to calculate the amount of heat energy that is absorbed by the

beverage.

-The given heat is entirely absorbed by the beverage in the reaction.

-The heat that is generated from the reaction is determined using a specific

heat capacity calculated for the beverage.

2nd step is to use the equation to develop specific heat capacity calculations.

- From the equation we can determine that mass of the beverage by

converting 8.0 fluid ounces of water into the appropriate units.

- There are 28.413 mL of water in 1 fluid ounce
- The density of water is 1.0 gram per 1.0 mL at 25C
- Use the heat capacity of water which is 4.18 J/gK

- Calculate the change in temperature that the water undergoes during

the chemical reaction.

- Calculate the heat energy that is being absorbed in the reaction.

3rd step is to assume that all the heat given off by the reaction is absorbed by

the beverage.

- Use the enthalpy charge to calculate the number of moles of calcium

oxide within the reaction.

- Convert moles of calcium oxide to grams of calcium oxide.
- The amount of heat energy absorbed by the beverage is given by the

following equation: Qbev= s x m x T

- The change in the temperature of the beverage that is used in our

calculations is given by the following equation: T = Tfinal Tinitial

- We can calculate how many moles of water react to convert grams of

water.
- We add up the combined mass of calcium oxide and water to see if it is

a quantity that is reasonable.

4th step the relationship between the heat absorbed by the beverage and the

heat generated by the reaction is given by the following equation:

Qbeverage = -Qreaction.

- We can determine the mass of the beverage in grams with the

following information
There are 2.413 mL of water in 1 fluid ounce
The density of water is 1.0 grams per 1.0 mL at 25C
We can determine the mass of the beverage to be 230 g
- 37 k/j of energy is absorbed by the beverage if the heat the container

from 25C to 63C

- We can then determine that .58 moles of calcium oxide must be

present in this sample to produce the necessary amount of heat

energy to warm the beverage.

- We can then understand that 33 g of calcium oxide and 10.0 mL of

water is needed for this reaction.

Based on our calculations we can determine that the self-heating can is a

feasible project.

Reflection

This case study interested me because it made me reflect on different

possible solutions, it allowed me to use quantitative skills that I learned in

this chemistry course to elaborate on the problem and to use Q- s*m*T

achieve my desired result. We can calculate the mass to be a total of 230

grams. We then calculate the amount of heat energy required for the

beverage to absorb this energy. This is done when a reaction takes place and

the change is temperature goes from 25C to 63 C which equals 37 k/J. We

already know that 33 g of calcium oxide and 10.0 mL of water are needed for

this reaction to take place. We added up the combined mass of calcium oxide

and water to reach a feasible reaction. Chemistry gave us the essential tools

to make this reaction happen. It allowed me to use quantitative skills that

Ive learned in this course to reach my full conclusion.

What amazes me about Chemistry is learning about the composition of

different objects. Chemistry teaches you what different thing are made of

and how those products are formed through different reactions that account

for life processes. Chemistry helped me as a student to learn about how

different reactions take place to form products in our daily external reality.

Chemistry has further helped me to develop my quantitative, and problem

solving skills. The existence of all lifeforms is based on chemical reactions.

All living cells get energy based on chemical reactions. All movements are

activities of chemical reactions driven by force. Understand chemistry is this

course has helped me to understand the world around me. Chemistry is an

essential subject that I learned from about our external environment and

what role we each play in it.
