How to Maximize the Role of School Psychologists
Coordination between Special Education Teachers and School Psychologists is key to completing
assessments within mandated timelines,
'* Special Education Teachers should coordinate with a Psychologist before developing assessment
plans to determine which areas need to be evaluated. Are there new areas of concern? Are
there areas that are not concerns or where there is already adequate data?
‘* Each box checked on the assessment plan obligates the Psychologist or other specialist to
evaluate in that area, even if t is not an area of concern. To avoid unnecessary testing Special
Education Teacher and Psychologist can review data together.
'* Special Education Teachers, Psychologist and any other support provider (SLP, OT) can schedule
a meeting to plan for triennial assessments that are coming up in the next 3 months.
Coordinating calendars for IEP meeting dates, testing periods and developing assessment plans
for multiple students with upcoming triennials could be addressed at this meeting.
* Psychologists and Special Education Teachers can identify those students who can have a file
review for triennial assessments when appropriate. There is a form in SEIS Document Library for
this purpose. 3 Year Evaluation and Existing File Data Review
‘* Psychologists need to be sent the signed assessment plan right away so they have 60 days to
complete the assessment. When the psychologist receives an assessment plan 2-3 weeks before
an IEP, this does not allow enough time for testing.
