MAED 3224
Subject: 5th Grade Math Central Focus:
Coordinate
planes
Common Core Objective: 5.OA.3 Generate two numerical patterns Date taught:
using two given rules. Identify apparent relationships between
corresponding terms. Form ordered pairs consisting of
corresponding terms from the two patterns, and graph the
ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.
Daily Lesson Objective:
Performance- Students will correctly plot at least 10 ordered pairs on a
graph
Conditions- independently
Criteria- with at least 80% accuracy.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills needed: Understand ordered pairs, x & y axises,
number lines, graphing

Activity Description of Activities and Setting Tim

e
1. Engage Today we will be learning about graphing 5
ordered pairs on coordinate planes. Graphing min
ordered pairs doesnt have to be boring, in
fact here are some examples. Show examples
of pictures made on a coordinate plane from
graphing ordered pairs. Here people have
graphed ordered pairs in a way that make a
picture.
2. Explore Now I want you to work with a partner to 10
(including solutions of make a picture on a coordinate plane. I want min
major tasks) you to see how many points you need to make
your picture. I also want you to use the whole
coordinate plane and pay attention to where
you are placing your dots. What quadrant are
they in? You should be drawing lines to
connect your dots. While you are make your
pictures I want you and your partner to ask
these questions to each other: Where on my
graph do I start when plotting ordered pairs?
How will a point that goes right and a point
that goes left look different? How will a point
that goes up and a point that goes down look
different? How do I know which way to go?
3. Explain Here is my picture I have made. Now I want 5-
to be able to give you the directions to make 10
this picture. How can I do that? How about if I min
give you the ordered pair for each dot. For
example this dot here. In order to get to this
dot I have to go over to the right 3 times and
up 2 times. Why do I go right and not left?
Why do I go up and not down? How do I know
which way to go? Notice where I started. I
started from the center or 0,0. Does everyone
see the numbers on the graph and where 0,0
is? Now my first number in my ordered pair
tells me to go left or right on my graph. If it is
positive it goes right and if it is negative it
goes left, just like the numbers underneath.
The second number tells me to go up or down.
Up is positive and down is negative. Lets look
at a few more examples. Now I want you to
work with your partner again to write the
ordered pairs that go along with your points.
4. Elaborate/Extend Now you are going to use ordered pairs to 10
create a picture. Your job is to graph each min
ordered pair and draw lines connecting them
to show the hidden picture.
5. Evaluate Summative: An exit ticket that will consist of 2 5
(assessment methods) ordered pairs to graph and an explanation for min
graphing each point. The grade will be out of
10 points. 2 points for correctly graphing each
point (x2) and 3 points for a correct
explanation for graphing each point (x2).
