Objectives Given context on the origins of the poem,
Alone, students will identify the metaphors
used by Poe with 100% accuracy.

Estimated time 15 20 minutes
Materials Required 5 copies of Alone by Poe
Prepped PowerPoint presentation on context
and metaphors
Procedure 1. Introduce Topic of Poe and metaphors.
2. Recall prior knowledge on Poe and
metaphors.
3. Explain objective.
4. Students read the poem.
5. Students discuss the poem.
6. Each student completes metaphor
identification activity on their own
with each student responsible for
identifying the metaphors in a portion
of the poem.
7. Give feedback and provide
explanations.
8. Students work together to complete
the final metaphor identification
activity on the demon.
9. Give examples of more poetry that
relies on the use of metaphors.
