Act III Paragraph Romeo and Juliet

Directions: On a separate sheet of paper, answer the question below in paragraph form. Use at

worksheet). Be sure to use the following format:

Essay Question: What new obstacles to Romeo and Juliets happiness are thrown up during this
act? Describe at least three examples. You may include any external or internal conflicts.

Example Paragraph:
In William Shakespeares play, Romeo and Juliet, the two title characters often act
irrationally and do not think before they act or make decisions. In Act 2, scene 2 of the play,
Juliet proposes marriage quickly, without thinking. On page 613, in line 94, Juliet says, if thou
dost love, pronounce it faithfully. Immediately following that statement, Juliet takes it back in
lines 95-96 by saying: Or if thou thinkest I am too quickly won, Ill frown and be perverse and
say thee nay. Juliet catches how irrationally she has acted by taking back her proposal for it
makes her seem too easily won. In addition to Juliet, Romeo also acts irrationally. In deciding to
break into the Capuletss orchard, Romeo has decided to put himself in danger of being harmed
or killed. When Juliet expresses her concern, Romeo responds on page 612 lines 71-72 by
saying, there lies more peril in thine eye than twenty of their swords. It is his belief that the
love shared between himself and Juliet will be enough to protect him from the swords and
daggers of his enemy. That thinking is both dangerous and irrational. Finally, the two characters
combined show just how irrational they can be as they decide to get married just one day after
meeting. On page 615, both characters agree that they need to wait just one day for marriage. In
line 168, they agree that by the hour of nine, they shall have word of marriage. They will have
known each other for less than a day before they wed. This shows the irrationality of how the
two think. Ultimately, the two are immature together and think irrationally as a pair and
individually.
