lessonoftheunit.StudentswereabletoanswersixoftheirwonderingsfromtheWant

toknowlistfromwhattheylearnedintheunit.Havingstudentslistallofthethingsthey

hadlearnedaboutmapswasapowerfulexperienceformeandforthem.Itconfirmedfor

methattheyhadmademajorgrowthagainsttheunitgoalsIhadsetoutforusandgave

studentsagenuinesenseofaccomplishmentwiththeircapacityforlearning.TheKWL

assistedmeinplanningtheunitbecauseitmademeawareofwhatstudentsalreadyknew

andsomeoftheirlearninggoals.Icomparedtheirinitialresponsestotheoverarching

themesIwantedtoaddressintheunit.

studentswereaskedtoapplyseveralofthemapcharacteristicstheyhadlearnedinorder

tocreateamapoftheirbedroom.AspreparationforthisassignmentItaughtalesson

beforehandthatwasdesignedtohelpthempracticetheskillsnecessarytosuccessfully

createamapoftheirown.Amapthatmettheexpectationssetoutwouldhaveamapkey,

birdseyeview,acompassrose(withdirectionsNorth,South,EastandWest),allofthe

objectsfromthestudentsroomandamaptitle.Twentyfourstudentsoutofatotalof

criteriatwentyfourstudentshadbirdseyeviewandamapkey.Twentythreehada

theirmaps.Nineteenstudentshadatitleontheirmaps.Ninetyfivepercentofstudents

achievedwhatIconsideredtobethethreemostimportantcriteria:birdseyeview,map

keyandcompass.Whilewetalkedaboutmapshavingtitles,especiallyduringourread

aloudsitwasnotsomethingwefocusedintenselyon.IrealizedthatIshouldhavepointed

thisoutmoresincesixstudentsfailedtoincludeatitleontheirbedroommap.
