DuringthefirstdaywerecordedtheKnowandWanttoknowsections.We
completedtheKnowcomponentfirstandthatwasagoodstartingpointforwhat
studentswantedtoknowaboutmaps.WefinishedtheLearnedportionduringthelast
lessonoftheunit.StudentswereabletoanswersixoftheirwonderingsfromtheWant
toknowlistfromwhattheylearnedintheunit.Havingstudentslistallofthethingsthey
hadlearnedaboutmapswasapowerfulexperienceformeandforthem.Itconfirmedfor
methattheyhadmademajorgrowthagainsttheunitgoalsIhadsetoutforusandgave
studentsagenuinesenseofaccomplishmentwiththeircapacityforlearning.TheKWL
assistedmeinplanningtheunitbecauseitmademeawareofwhatstudentsalreadyknew
andsomeoftheirlearninggoals.Icomparedtheirinitialresponsestotheoverarching
themesIwantedtoaddressintheunit.

Thesummativeassessmentfortheunitconsistedofatakehomeprojectinwhich
studentswereaskedtoapplyseveralofthemapcharacteristicstheyhadlearnedinorder
tocreateamapoftheirbedroom.AspreparationforthisassignmentItaughtalesson
beforehandthatwasdesignedtohelpthempracticetheskillsnecessarytosuccessfully
createamapoftheirown.Amapthatmettheexpectationssetoutwouldhaveamapkey,
birdseyeview,acompassrose(withdirectionsNorth,South,EastandWest),allofthe
objectsfromthestudentsroomandamaptitle.Twentyfourstudentsoutofatotalof

twentyfourstudentscompletedandturnedintheassignment.Inregardstothesuccess
criteriatwentyfourstudentshadbirdseyeviewandamapkey.Twentythreehada
compassrose.Twentyfourfeaturedasignificantamountofobjectsintheirbedroomon
theirmaps.Nineteenstudentshadatitleontheirmaps.Ninetyfivepercentofstudents
achievedwhatIconsideredtobethethreemostimportantcriteria:birdseyeview,map
keyandcompass.Whilewetalkedaboutmapshavingtitles,especiallyduringourread
aloudsitwasnotsomethingwefocusedintenselyon.IrealizedthatIshouldhavepointed
thisoutmoresincesixstudentsfailedtoincludeatitleontheirbedroommap.

qualityofworkthatwasreturneditappearsthatallstudentswerecapableofcompleting
theprojectindependently.Still,thispotentialpitfallwillbesomethingIcontinueto
considerasIworkwithprimarystudentswhoarelessabletocompleteprojectswithout
adultsupport.
