MULTI-GENRE READING AND WRITING 2

Multi-Genre Reading and Writing

After completing this unit, I realized that I include text structures in my remedial classes,

but I do not expand students understanding on these text structures in my advanced courses.

Moving forward, I plan to use graphic organizers and focus on text structures in expository and

primary texts in my English 4 and English 5 classes. I think that this can be very valuable in

aiding in students understanding of these complex texts while also increasing literacy through

an awareness of the structure of the text; currently my focus is more on authors purpose.

Students in my advanced Humanities courses also get an expository writing credit for my

class. Often times, students struggle with how to react to a prompt on assessments. I think that

focusing on the structure of expository texts will provide my students with an arsenal of

structures to approach a topic. I am very eager to see if a clearer understanding of these

functions will increase students self-efficacy when approaching a cold prompt.
