On February third, the AHA's, Go Red For Women, encourages all to wear red as
part of National Wear Red Day. To Go Red on this day means you can help to
spotlight the disease and bring awareness to encourage further research that in
turn, will help save more lives! To date, more than 60 million dollars have been
raised towards the awareness of the disease, through sponsors like Macys, volun-
teerism, and everyday women who feel empowered to understand their personal
risk for the disease and share what they know with their loved ones. Making small
changes towards a healthier lifestyle, go a long way towards improving heart health.
Here is the dose of good news. Like many of us who aspire to make healthier choic-
es in the new year and are off to a rocky start, you are not alone. Jump-starting new
year's resolutions may prove to be difficult. Whether spending more time with the
family, or simply doing more of the things you love, finding the right time or the
willpower to put your plan into action is a task in its own. The month of February
offers a bit of encouragement for procrastinators such as myself, by promoting the
heart all month long. Our heart is the most hardworking organ in our body, beating
100,000 times in a day, pumping blood through the body. Our emotions are often
coupled to our hearts, we live, we love and prepare the meals our families enjoy
from our hearts. For the abilities our hearts provide, Go Red for Women encourag-
es women to protect their hearts by becoming aware of their personal risk for heart
diseases by knowing their personal health numbers. That is, Cholesterol, Blood
Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI) numbers, considered the first steps towards the
prevention of heart disease. Go Red For Womens website, offers resourceful tool
to help women live a heart healthier lifestyle as well as how to share a personal
story of survival or as a caregiver.
Among the simple things, and from which, I myself can benefit from is, taking a
break from a busy life to enjoy an old craft, movie or book. Finding ways to relieve
stress, is one way to look after your heart. Having good laughs with friends and
family is another way to success. No matter what your resolution may be, the moti-
vation to start can be found in the month of February and so can the reason to follow
through all year round. February third, may be one day to demonstrate awareness
for the cause however, advocacy is a year round effort, and a critical component to
womens health. By participating in heart healthy activities and helping to spread the
word regarding the risks associated with heart disease we can help the AHAs goal
to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing
deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent by 2020. As we
prepare to Go Red on February third, ensure a heart healthy start to the year by
scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider, which can provide further
resources and educational material regarding the disease.

Charlie was a driving force behind the Junior Citizen of the Month program
and he sought out my help and appointed me to lead the program which
exists still today and the High Schools love it.
As a former Mayor of the City of Montebello in the 60s (see pictures), Charlie
often shared that fact with those with whom he came in contact in recent
years.
He also like to say that the new City Hall Complex happened on his watch as
Mayor. Charlie was Charlie, a veteran, a college graduate, a husband, and a
father of two fine daughters. We had nice times sitting and talking these past
couple of years. He will be missed.
Charlie was living in a home where they took care of veterans but he chose
not to be buried in a Veterans Cemetery but next to his wife, Dorothy, at
Rose Hills.
by Donald E. Travis
Charlie could be characterized as "old school Secretary", the type before the
advent of computers. As I was treasurer all during the time Charlie was
secretary, he would bring me a box of yellow pad notes, paid bills files, finan-
cial data, etc., and from that I would prepare the Lodge six and twelve month
reports.
For a number of those years, he also held down a job, was active in High
Twelve, the Montebello Elks, and had a family of his own to look after. He
managed to keep office hours that the members knew they could stop by
and find him to be available.
