Usui and the Origins of Reiju

Mikao Usui empowered his students regularly as part of their training at all
levels. What he did can be referred to as Reiju blessing of the five powers, a
blessing made with the intention that the student should receive what they
need. In order to achieve this, Mikao Usui used intent only, and students
received their empowerments either in Usui Senseis presence or as they left his
presence. Usui did not use any physical ritual to achieve this: he used intent
alone.
What was Usui doing? In essence he was transferring a Tendai Buddhist
blessing, the sort of blessing that a Tendai teacher would bestow on his
students, made with the intention that the student should receive what they
need.
Within Tendai Buddhism there are two ways that this blessing can be carried out,
two forms of blessing: there was an internal form and an external form. The
internal form of Reiju is what Mikao Usui used, using intention alone, and it
seems only possible to use this method effectively if the teacher has progressed
a great deal in terms of their spiritual development.
