Assignment #3 Centrifugal Pump

(Submission date: 21st May 2016)

1. (a) By the aid of diagram, describe the operating principle and main components
of a centrifugal pump.

(b) Sketch the velocity triangle at outlet for three type of impeller blades. Discuss
the advantages, disadvantages and suitable application for the three type of
the impeller blades.

2. (a) Show that the theoretical pressure head rise through the impeller of a
centrifugal pump is given by
1 2
(1 22 2
2
2 2 )
2

where
Vr1 : velocity of flow at inlet
Vr2 : velocity of flow at outlet
U2 : circumferential velocity of impeller at outlet
2 : impeller angle at outlet

(b) A centrifugal pump is discharging water at the rate of 8.25 liter/s at 1200 rpm.
The inlet and outlet diameters of the impeller are 12 cm and 24 cm respectively.
The width of the impeller at inlet and outlet are 16 mm and 8 mm respectively.
The vanes are curved back 25o at the tangent at outlet. Calculate the increase
in pressure, as the water passes through the impeller.

3. A centrifugal pump supplies water at the rate of 150 liter/s and running 1500 rpm.
Diameter and width of the impeller at inlet are 200 cm and 15 cm, while at outlet 400
cm and 8 mm respectively. The blades are backward-curved type with angle 38o.
Neglecting all the losses and determine pressure difference across the impeller.

4. A centrifugal pump supplies 13600 liters of water per minute. The pump produces
manometric head of 22.5 m when rotates at 1500 rpm. Determine
(a) Diameter of impeller at outlet
(b) Blade angle at outlet
Assume manometric efficiency is 75% and head loss in pump due to friction is V 2/30,
with V is the absolute velocity exit of water exit the impeller. The area of outlet is
0.112D2 with D is the outlet diameter and the water enters without whirl.

5. A centrifugal pump with outlet diameter 400 mm width of outlet impeller 15 mm is
required to produce manometric head of = 60 + 500 2 where Q is the volume
flowrate. The diameter at the inlet is 200 mm works at 1450 rpm with backward curved
impeller of 45o. The impeller blades occupy 10 % of the circumference. The
manometric and overall efficiency of the pump are 85 % and 75 % respectively.
Determine

(a) Volume flowrate, Q

(b) Power input
(c) Blade angle at inlet.

6. A centrifugal pump is discharging water at the rate of 0.2 m3/s at 1200 rpm. The inlet
diameter and area of the impeller are 30 cm and 0.1 m respectively. The vanes are
curved back 30o at the tangent at outlet. The suction and inlet pipe diameter are 30
cm and 22.5 cm respectively. The discharge and suction pipe static pressure show
181.5 kPa and -24.5 kPa readings respectively. If the pump needs a 70 kW input power,
calculate
(a) the manometric efficiency
(b) the overall efficiency
